The Hellenic Center for Marine Research (ELKETHE) is hosting for the first time in Greece the 8th European Scientific Diving Conference. The conference takes place at the Cultural and Conference Center of Heraklion from today 22 to 26 April 2024.

The field of scientific diving is a highly dynamic interdisciplinary discipline that supports a range of fields such as marine biology and ecology, archeology and geology. In the context of the global climate crisis and the dramatic changes in the marine environment, modern underwater research is fundamental for the production of reliable scientific results and the subsequent planning of appropriate management actions. At the same time, the systematic recording and understanding of the underwater natural and man-made environment is directly linked to the strengthening of the Greek and European cultural identity.

The European Scientific Diving Conference was first organized in its current form in 2015 and has been held annually since then. It is co-organized by the European Scientific Diving Panel, a scientific organization under the auspices of the European Marine Board and is the main pillar of promoting excellence in scientific diving and harmonizing its practices at European level. Every year, the European Scientific Diving Conference brings together scientists from different research fields with the common core of conducting human underwater research.

Scientific program

The conference program is divided into 4 distinct thematic sections that will be developed over three days of work, April 23-24 and 25, and cover the topics of marine biology, underwater archaeology, marine geosciences, as well as the regulation and training of scientific diving in Europe. In each thematic section, before the conference announcements, there will be an opening speech

invited speech by invited internationally recognized and influential scientists: Dr. Lorenzo Bramanti, French National Center for Scientific Research, Dr. Stelios Katsanevakis, Professor at the University of the Aegean, Dr. Stella Demestikha, Professor at the University of Cyprus and Pierre Yves Cousteau, Founder and CEO of Cousteau Divers.

Organizational elements

The work of the conference will be held at the Cultural and Conference Center of Heraklion, in the center of the city. 100 participants are expected from the European and global research web, as well as the field of entrepreneurship and technological innovation. During the conference, the participants will have the opportunity to get to know the daily life in the city of Heraklion, while guided visits to the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion will be organized, as well as a dive to get to know the underwater environment of Crete.

The scientific coordination of the conference is done by Drs. Maria Salomidis and Dr. Thanos Dailiani, researchers of the Hellenic Center for Marine Research, in collaboration with a 12-member scientific committee and the European Scientific Diving Panel.

The Conference is organized with the kind support of the Region of Crete. Aegean Airlines is sponsoring the air transport of the invited guests.
