Five of the 64 arrested accused of organizing the attacks on Rentis, moral authorship in the murder of the 31-year-old Giorgos Lyggeridisand for a criminal organization that as a “roving army” participated in at least 10 incidents of extreme violence in sports venues.
Actions concerning the activity of the criminal organization concern incidents in Ioannina, Volos, Lamia, Attica, Malakasa, Ilion, New Philadelphia, Crete, Tripoli.
The 40-year-old “Joseph” or “Short”, a leading member of Gate 7 of Olympiakos, seems to have been the main organizer of the attacks against the police forces and the murder of 31-year-old Giorgos Lyggeridis.
The attack on the indoor gym Melina Merkouris in Rentis on December 7, 2023, was planned “retaliation” for what had developed four days earlier in Volos with the police forces.
“Let’s clean them up, finish them off” was the slogan used by the “chief” referring to the policemen who would be in Rentis. “Joseph” or “Kontos” at the time of his arrest, on Sunday night, in a cafe in Ioannina he had 5,000 euros in his pockets and 4 mobile phones, with the police speculating that he would seek to escape abroad.
The 27-year-old “OMLE”manager of a well-known trapper and noted “leader” of the West Suburbs association, accused in at least 4 court cases, is the one who transmitted the orders of the attack and brought reinforcements. He was one of the “key-keepers” of the warehouse from which he allegedly carried armaments and naval flares. In fact, he allegedly was the one who gave the fatal flare to the 18-year-old, who confessed to hitting the unfortunate policeman.
A 36-year-old nicknamed “Romanian”was among the 3 arrested in a fight in April 2024 at the Karaiskaki stadium, in the context of an internal dispute.
And two 31-year-olds, Mr “Shark”, a well-known connectionist of Korydallos, and “coconut”who was arrested in 2013 for 4 racist attacks, including one on a barbershop of a Pakistani citizen in Metamorfosi.
“Strike Teams” and “Associates”
The last three gave in turn orders to attack the “strike teams”, they passed on instructions via social media while they had physical presence in Rentis and in other incidents guiding attackers against police forces.
Twenty more arrested constituted the main executive “core”, the traveling “army” for the occurrence of incidents and attacks, while there were still 40 the “associates” with extraordinary holdingsin order to give a numerical superiority to the plan of actions.
They have evolved dozens of home surveys and various pieces of evidence have been seized, while the evidence resulting from the declassification of communications and suspect connections, DNA results as well as from people who have submitted requests to be included in the witness protection program are important. There are quite a few findings, clothing found in the homes of those arrested and identified with the videos of the attacks.
They were also identified DNA from burnt clothes that had been found in the toilets of the closed gym. Also seized were two pistols, naval flares, knives, collapsible globes, drugs.
It should be noted that in one case, when the police went to arrest one of the accused, he pulled out a collapsible globe and hit a policeman in the head, who was taken to hospital. “I thought you were thieves,” he told the officers.
3,000 pages of the case file
The lawyer of one of the 60 arrested, Nektarios Loukopoulos, spoke about a voluminous case file, over 3,000 pages, which however does not contain clear evidence of involvement for its principal.
Appreciate that “probably everything was done to impress” stating that a transfer has not yet been drawn up. “So we don’t even know the charges. They arrested them without telling them what they were accused of,” he said.
Finally, he emphasized that his client is not an organized fan and that he was among the 400 initially arrested after the Lyggeridis murder, on the evening of December 7, 2023, but he had been released.
Stavros Georgiou, a lawyer for another arrested, said that the charges they will face are related to organized criminal activity and attempted murder. He emphasized that his principal was not among those initially brought in, but accepted that he threw a stone.
He noted, finally, that as the case files develop, they will be related to that of the Piraeus investigator, which concerns purely the murder of the unfortunate policeman.
