The fire in building C of the student residences on the campus of the University of Ioannina in Durouti reached the Parliament, with a topical question tabled by the Member of Parliament of Ioannina of the KKE, Nikos Exarchos.

Mr. Exarchos in the debate on the question conveyed the complaints of the students, that “the alarm did not work, there was no plan to evacuate the building and the fire safety systems did not work in time, but also that in the flames and smoke alone they informed each other the other in order to evacuate the building and get everyone out safely.”

He also reported that “on the night of the fire, the alarm and fire extinguishers did not work, the fire extinguishing system was activated after two hours, when the fire brigade was already on the scene”.

Also, the MP added that “material damage has been caused to the rooms, making several of them uninhabitable and that after pressure from the boarders themselves and their associations to the Rectorate of the University of Ioannina, the boarders of the 3rd building were moved to other rooms , but many of which are in a bad state”.

He attributed responsibility to the government and the ministry, he also said that no official record of damages has been made in order to compensate the tenants, but also that the Association of Residential Students of the University of Ioannina, student associations and the employees of the Technical Service “warned and demanded measures to upgrade the services and of the buildings themselves, highlighting that the situation is dangerous, but also that it is infuriating that a monthly fee of 40 euros is required to stay in these residences of the public University”.

In his rejoinder, he cited staff shortages, saying the institution’s maintenance department operates with one employee and there is no security technician.

In response, the Deputy Minister of Education Zeta Makri said that the rector of the institution conveyed a different image to her, but also disclaimed the government’s responsibility for compensations, citing the “autonomy of universities”…
