Haris Doukas for Vass. Olgas: The road is “open” for cars on weekdays

My plan is for the road to be open for cars on weekdays and closed on weekends, said Haris Doukas, speaking about Vasilissis Olgas Avenue, in Syntagma.

Referring to the ongoing projects in the area, the mayor of Athens stated that he “respects the archaeologists” but Athens cannot bear a new “big walk” and that in the immediate future, once the projects are completed, the goal is to hand over the road to traffic. A road with light traffic, with one lane, is planned, the mayor said and revealed that his plan is to allow cars to use Vasilissis Olgas on weekdays, especially to turn from Amalias Avenue to the Panathinaikos Stadium and not have to go all the way to Koukaki, as he characteristically said. As for the weekends, the plan of the municipality of Athens is for the road to be closed so that pedestrians can walk freely. Pedestrianism is not planned, as he insisted.

Speaking to Sky, Mr. Doukas also said that the municipal police of Athens confirm 50,000 calls per month which only concern double parking and illegal parking on disabled ramps. The purpose is to decongest the city so that it can “breathe”, as Haris Doukas characteristically said.

At the same time, the mayor of Athens recognized the problem of occupying public space that the city is experiencing, promising to take initiatives to solve it. “I disagree with the arbitrary occupation of public space,” he said characteristically, adding that he will take initiatives to solve the problem.

Haris Doukas appeared satisfied with the first 100 days of his term as mayor of Athens, adding that what his team set as goals in the first 100 days “we caught them with difficulty”. There are times when I’m like, ‘aman, we messed up,’” he also joked. Speaking about the Public University, he said that it deserves more support and funding, but also in terms of infrastructure, adding that he is “with the students in the fight for better free public education”. With regard to the project for the reconstruction of the Botanical Garden, the mayor said that the project is running, the municipality’s bulldozers have entered, and the contractors will also enter in the next few days, as there are commitments for 2026. It is a “marathon in the form of a sprint”. , he also said.
