Symbolic protest to Syntagma Square against its degradation Court of First Instance of Messolonghi, by new judicial map held on Sunday (22.4.2024) representatives of organizations, a large number of citizens, but also the three philharmonics of the city.

The residents express anger and rage, as the Regional Unit of Etoloakarnania is the only exception nationwide, where the central Court of First Instance is not based in the capital, i.e. in Mesolongi, which is defined as a parallel court of first instance, but in Agrinio, renamed the First Court of Etoloakarnania.

Representatives of the municipal authority, as well as city agencies, are talking about institutional diversion and discrediting of the city, who express their strong dissatisfaction with the forecast of new judicial charter, which was tabled on Friday night in Parliament by the Ministry of Justice and on Tuesday it will be submitted for processing to the competent law-making committee of the Parliament and in fact at a time when the city has already started the events of honor for the 198th anniversary of Exit of Messolonghi.

“We demand justice for Messolonghi”

“Our goal is to convince, even at the last moment, the government not to proceed with the looming degradation of our central Court of First Instance, of the Court of First Instance which has been operating for the last almost 200 years, continuously in the capital of the prefecture Etoloakarnanias and to convince the government that the Medium length she does not ask for an exception to be made, she demands that no derogatory exception be made to the law she is bringing, as it is the only capital and the entire country that is being degraded in this brutal way” said the mayor of I.P. Messolonghi Spyros Diamantopoulos.

“For our freedom to exist, there must also be justice. Justice towards the city of freedom. That is why we here, in front of the Greek Parliament, are asking for justice for the Messolonghi”, the deputy regional governor of Etoloakarnania said in his statement Thanasis Mavrommatis.

“Unacceptable to be the only exception nationwide”

“We believe that in Aitoloakarnania, which is essentially two prefectures, with special geomorphological characteristics, both Courts of First Instance should be maintained as central and independent and there should be no other changes to the judicial map”, a source from the municipality tells protothema.gr and adds: “However, if it is decided to retain one Court of First Instance as central, this should be the Court of First Instance of Messolonghi, which is the capital of the Regional Unit of Etoloakarnania. This is what is right and just. As was the case in all the Regional Units of Greece, regardless of population size”.

The protests of the residents are also strong, who consider that the downgrading of the Court of First Instance, which is one of the three oldest since the Greek state was established, will be another blow after the deforestation of Messolonghi by a series of services, the TEI, the downgrading of the Hospital. The residents express their anxiety about the future of the city, while they consider that the history of Messolonghi is being discredited.
