Dangers from “congestion” – The spiral highlights the problems of the summer season in Monodendri

The problems and dangers posed by the traffic congestion in the summer months in the coastal area of ​​Monodentriou are highlighted by the local councilor of the spiral, Panagiotis Tsiliras, pointing out that the residents are already gathering signatures as a means of pressure in every direction, mainly towards the Municipality of Patreon.

As Mr. Tsiliras mentions “during the last years, the beach front of Roitikon – Monodendriou – Vrachnaikon has become an indisputable pole of attraction for the people of Patras and not only, since it is a nearby destination, just 10 km from the center of Patras, with natural greenery and plenty of restaurants. However, the existing structures, combined with the increasing trend of permanent residents, are unable to cope with the needs that arise especially during weekends, holidays and the summer months.
The transport service of the area is carried out by line No. 5 of the urban KTEL, whose routes have generally been limited, while recently their passage from the coastal road and from ZONE B: Agyia-Kaminia of the suburban railway, which however, it makes the closest stop at Vrachneika. Therefore, residents and visitors of Monodendri should either walk at least half an hour to and from the respective stations or secure a means of transportation to get there. There are no outdoor free parking spaces in the area.
The stores’ private parking spaces are either insufficient to serve their customers or do not exist. The problem of lack of space and poor coexistence of pedestrians and cars is therefore obvious
and the two-wheelers, which park and move quite arbitrarily, putting passengers and pedestrians at risk.
Space for walking or cycling non-existent.
Movement for People with Special Needs and parents with children in strollers is unequivocally prohibited.
At the same time, due to the movement it is:
– The arrival of an ambulance is completely impossible.
– Totally impossible for a fire engine to arrive.
– Totally impossible to escape immediately in case of emergency.
SUGGESTIONS FOR AN EFFECTIVE TREATMENT
In addition to highlighting the problems, Mr. Tsiliras also submits specific proposals for effectively dealing with the problem ahead of Easter and the summer season, among which are:
– The periodic interruption or restriction of traffic during holidays and summer months.
– For the implementation of this periodic interruption or restriction of traffic, it is necessary to assign a study to a Traffic Engineer without delay and its approval by the Municipal Committee, which, among other things, will ensure the possibility of access by car to the private parking areas of the residents and shops.
– To determine parking spaces for permanent residents.
– To intensify the itineraries of M.M.M. to the area.
– To speed up the process of renting a parking space and to provide a financial incentive.
– To initiate the creation of a suburban bus stop in Monodendri.
– To expand Zone 4 of the Strategic Plan for Sustainable Urban Development (SUPD) of the Municipality of Patreon and to include the beach front of Monodendri – Vrachnaikon.
