Sophia: The First ‘Social Robot’ – Speaks 20 Languages

Sophia is the first “social robot”, since she can imitate social behavior and evoke emotions in people. Through its state-of-the-art technology, it constantly learns from its contact with people, can imitate gestures, and has more than 60 facial expressions, from smiles to grimaces. In fact, Sophia knows when to use the appropriate expressions without being programmed, demonstrating her ability to learn as she continues to develop. It is characteristic that she improves her interaction through every mistake she makes, as her brain is an advanced technological platform based on Artificial Intelligence, which allows her to evolve through experience. He is also able to answer certain questions and have simple conversations about predetermined topics (e.g. the weather).

She speaks 20 languages fluently, including Greek, while her IQ is higher than Einstein’s. It was created in 2016 and a year later it received Saudi citizenship, becoming the first robot to receive legal personality in any country. Also, in 2017 Sophia became the first non-human to receive the title of United Nations Development Program Champion of Innovation.

It was designed to be a helpful member of society, to be a suitable companion for the elderly in nursing homes, to assist crowds at large events, museums and parks, or to be put at the service of clients, therapies, educational applications and university research. Its goal is the achievement of mechanical wisdom, after all its name comes from the word philosophy, i.e. the love of wisdom. “Sophia could not be absent from this year’s BEYOND, where the revolution of Artificial Intelligence will be a central theme, which will be thoroughly analyzed through its role and effects in our daily lives” is stated in today’s TIF-Helexpo announcement AE.

BEYOND, which aspires to be the leading event of its kind in Southeast Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, is organized by TIF-HELEXPO, Be-Best and Industry Disruptors Game Changers (IDGC), co-organized by the Ministry of Digital of Governance, the Region of Central Macedonia, the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE) and the Municipality of Thessaloniki. It is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism and the Panhellenic Union of General Secretaries of Local Government “Kleisthenis”.
