The need to formulate a new philosophy for the resolution of disputes, outside the courtrooms, as well as the encouraging elements of the institution of mediation were recorded during the proceedings of the conference co-organized by Organization for the Promotion of Alternative Dispute Resolution Methods (OPEMED) and the Union of Judges and Prosecutors (ENDE), in the event hall of the Athens Court of Appeal, on the topic: “Mediation and Judicial Mediation”.

In particular, the Minister of Justice Giorgos Floridis, according to a statement by OPEMED, he pointed out that “there is a lot of room for improvement in the institution of mediation and judicial mediation”, stressing that “changes are needed in the Judiciary”.

According to Mr. Floridis, “if we manage to resolve some cases out of court, we will help relieve the judges from the increased workload”, which can contribute to the faster delivery of Justice and as he explained that “from the experience we have, it will be shaped the new framework”.

The president of ENDE, Margarita Stenioti, emphasized that “this event puts a stone in the way for citizens to trust mediation”, and added that “it is a direct, fast, flexible process that helps the two parties to agree on a mutually acceptable solution, with the help of the mediator” while emphasizing that “where it has been implemented, it has been crowned with success” and that it “contributes to the promotion of legal culture”. For his part, the president of OPEMED and president of the Personal Data Protection Authority, Konstantinos Menoudakos, referred to the need to create a new culture for resolving disputes, as he said the cases brought to the courts must be reduced and he expressed his satisfaction that they are being examined by the State, improvements and additions to the 2019 law.

Regarding the best implementation of the institution of mediation, Mr. Menoudakos clarified that “the attitude of the legal world and especially the lawyers should have the primary position”, while estimating that “the initially negative position seems to have started to change”.
