Tragedy unfolded in Thessaloniki today as a man allegedly killed himself by falling from the White Tower.
The person, aged 28 from Crete, was found unconscious after falling from the monument.
A mobile unit of the EKAB immediately arrived at the scene. Despite continuous efforts to resuscitate him by rescuers and EKAB nurses, he was unfortunately pronounced dead.
However, according to the information so far available to the authorities, the 38-year-old man originally from Crete ended his life.
Police are reviewing video footage from the monument’s security cameras that shows the moment the 38-year-old man decides to jump into the void. The video reportedly shows the man taking a turn, jumping over the guard rail and diving into the void.
The 38-year-old first hit the windowsill between the battlements and then ended up on the ground.
The circumstances are being investigated.
“We heard a loud noise, it was the tree branch breaking when the man fell on it. No screams were heard from the man when he fell. The police arrived at the scene within seconds,” an eyewitness told makthes.gr.
