Italy: Pitbulls snatched a baby from his uncle’s arms and mauled him
A 15-month-old baby was fatally injured on Monday morning by two pit bull dogs at a private residence in Salerno, southern Italy, a short distance from Naples.
While the baby was in his uncle’s arms, suddenly the two dogs – which belong to a family friend – but recently lived in the same house, attacked him, “grabbing” it from the man and wounding it all over his body. The child’s mother tried to save him, putting her body forward as a shield, and was taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
The ambulance doctors arrived at the scene of the tragic incident in record time, but the child had already succumbed to his injuries.
“They literally grabbed it out of his uncle’s hands and bit it. The veterinary service will take both dogs that did not belong to the family affected by this tragedy but to another family that lives in the same house. It was a vicious attack and despite relatives of the child intervening to try to free him, nothing could be done,” Empoli (Salerno) mayor Mario Conte told the Italian news agency ANSA. “It all happened suddenly, within moments and no one can explain how it happened as these dogs were always there. The child’s family probably rented the house. It is a tragedy that has shocked the entire community. And it should be a warning for those who have these dogs that are unfortunately special,” the mayor added.
Last February, a man living in the Manciana area, just outside Rome, was fatally attacked by three rottweiler dogs while jogging in a wooded area.
