Region of Thessaly: Fighting mosquitoes also in private outdoor areas of houses – Emphasis on Parakarlian villages

In an announcement by the Region of Thessaly, the following are highlighted:

“With an important innovation for the first time this year, the undertaking of mosquito control actions even in private outdoor areas of houses, such as in yards and gardens, the implementation of the Mosquito Control Program of the Region of Thessaly has begun.

Giving special emphasis to the Parakarlian settlements, the Deputy Regional Health Minister Mr. Evag. Apostolou, head of the scientific team, visited areas that were affected last September by the natural disaster and held informative meetings with both agencies and residents of the area, initially in the villages of Kalamaki and Amygdali, where residents of Kastri and Neochori were also present, as well as the Mayor of Agia, Mr. Ant. Goudaras.

Afterwards, in Kileler, he had a meeting with the presidents of the Paracarlian communities of Melissa, Kileler, Stefanovikiou, Sotirio, M. Monastiriou, Niki, Galini and Halki, in the presence of municipal councilors of the region, who showed great interest in being informed about the project to fight mosquitoes both in Lake Karla, the surrounding areas and within the settlements, as well as for taking personal protection measures, such as eliminating pockets of stagnant water in the exterior areas of homes that favor the growth of mosquitoes.

Mr. Apostolou emphasized the great importance given by the Region of Thessaly to the protection of the residents of the Parakarlian areas from mosquitoes and is reflected in its planned actions in the urban system (in public and private spaces) that will take place this year for the first time.

These move along three main axes and concern:

1) Mapping of all potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes (cesspools, cisterns, water collection containers, drains, flooded basements, etc.) in the private areas of houses, such as yards and gardens of all Parakarlian settlements

2) Mapping of all potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes in the common areas (wells and rainwater channels, fountains, out-of-service tanks, uncontrolled waste disposal areas, etc.) of all Parakarlian settlements

3) Larvicide and residual aphidicide actions in the above outbreaks

It is pointed out that the spraying interventions will be carried out with approved formulations that do not affect the health of both humans and animals”.
