Regular Member her Academy of Europe (Academia Europaea) in the class of Classical and Oriental Studies was elected Associate Professor of Ancient Greek Philology of the Philology Department of the AUTH Sophia Xenophontos.
Ms. Xenophontos is one of the youngest regular members of the Academy, the only female classical philologist from Greece to be elected a member of the Academia Europaea and the first Cypriot scientist among men and women to become a member of the Academy not only in classical studies but and in all humanities classes.
Academia Europaea was founded in 1988 and is an international non-governmental organization, with distinguished researchers of international scope from all fields of science, including scientists awarded with the Nobel Prize (Nobel Laureates). The sole selection criterion is “proven scientific excellence in the candidate’s field”.
THE Rector of AUTH, Professor Charalambos Feidascongratulated Professor Sofia Xenophontos of the Philology Department of the AUTH, for her important distinction, emphasizing “The fact that the election to the Academia Europaea results from a proposal by members of the Academy, a strict assessment of the scientific work of each candidate and validation by the competent bodies of the Academy, confirms the international recognition of Sophia Xenophontos by the scientific community and the significant impact of her research”.
THE President of the Academy of Europe, Professor Marja Makarow, congratulated Ms. Xenophontos for her success in the competitive election process, among 600 nominations. He emphasized that the Council of the Academy praised the contribution of Ms. Xenophontos to the promotion of classical and Byzantine literature through her original published work and her action in the international academic arena.
