When he heard of the arrests, the father of the police officer Giorgos Lyggeridis, who was killed by a flare during the Rentis incidents last December, fell into the arms of his child’s colleagues with emotion.

The policeman’s father was at an event on fan violence when he heard the news of the developments in his son’s case, according to which at least 57 people have been arrested in connection with the killing of the policeman in Rentis.

“We are waiting for the justice system to do the right thing. Today they started, from what we learned. My child’s memory must be vindicated. The hero. My son. For all of Greece, for all the police. He is my new family, all my children in here are my son. I hugged them all one by one. They give me courage, they keep me upright”, said Mr. Athanasios Lyggeridis with tears in his eyes, referring to his son’s platoon.

The Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis was also present at the event and assured the family that they will not be alone and that “Georgos symbolizes how abhorrent violence is in any society”.

“We say never let there be another new child at the altar of sports violence and violence. Unfortunately, this happened to George. Another child lost by a hooligan’s murderous action. There are also moral perpetrators, I am happy today with what we hear from the Greek Police”, said the Deputy Minister of Sports, Yannis Vroutsis, in his turn.
