A contract was signed on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at the Ministry of National Defense between the National Defense Fund (NDF) and the Ministry of Health for the concession of 150 acres of the former Camp “Karatassiou A” for the purpose of building the New Oncology Thessaloniki Hospital. The official concession of the former Camp is the first big step for the construction of the New Oncology Hospital of Thessaloniki, which will be the most modern in the Balkans and will be located at a very short distance from “Papageorgiou” and 424 GSN.

The granted area is located in the Municipality of Pavlos Mela in Polichni, Thessaloniki, directly opposite the already existing Hospitals PAPAGEORGIOU and 424 GSNE (General Military Training Hospital). This point is chosen as an optimal location solution, as it is adjacent to the 2 aforementioned large Hospitals on the Thessaloniki regional road.

With today’s contract, the government announcement of the Government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis for the construction of the New Oncology Hospital of Thessaloniki, which will contribute decisively to the provision of better quality health services in Northern and Central Greece, is on track for implementation.

After the signing of the contract, the Deputy Minister of Health Mr. Marios Themistokleous stated:

“Our commitments are being implemented. The start of this project is the implementation of the commitment of our Government to the citizens of Northern Greece. This hospital will serve as a model throughout the Balkan region in the health sector, providing high-level services.

The project involves the relocation and operation of an oncology complex aimed at diagnosis, treatment and health promotion.

The hospital will have a capacity of 425 beds, equipped with the latest medical technology, ensuring more efficient services and modern treatment methods. A palliative care unit for end-stage patients will also operate in the complex. It will be the first PPP project to be done in the health sector in our country.

I would like to warmly thank the National Defense Fund for the valuable concession of the former Camp, the Minister of National Defense Mr. Nikos Dendias and the Deputy Minister Mr. Yiannis Kefalogiannis for our effective cooperation”.

The Deputy Minister of National Defense Mr. Yiannis Kefalogiannis stated:

“The signing of the Concession Agreement of 150 acres of the former KARATASIOU A’ Camp, between the National Defense Fund and the Ministry of Health, paves the way for the construction of the New Thessaloniki Oncology Hospital. This is a project of an emblematic nature, with a huge social footprint in Northern and Central Greece, with which another pre-election commitment of the Government is realized with the decisive contribution of the Minister of National Defense Mr. Nikos Dendias. I would like to congratulate the National Defense Fund for its contribution to the realization of this great concession, which proves in the most practical way the profound social sign of the Armed Forces who always stand by society, wherever and whenever the need arises, contributing decisively to defending the well-being of citizens and their equal access to the highest good of medical care. At the same time, we ensured significant compensatory benefits for the National Defense Fund, proving that we use the real estate of the Armed Forces in the best possible way.”
