The “history of Crete through the local press” is the title of the exhibition hosted in a hall of its building complex Panagia Gouverniotissa located in Potamies of the Municipality of Hersonissos.

A significant exhibition of historical documents that is also combined with an honorary tribute to the journalist Nikos Kazantzakis.

The exhibition gates will be open from tomorrow, Tuesday, April 23 to agencies, schools and citizens until November 15.

Visitors can tour through four historical periods: the Turkish-Egyptian, the Cretan State, the Asia Minor disaster, but also the Second World War and through the newspapers to refer back to the big and small moments of the local society, its joys and misfortunes, its anxieties and desires.

They are immortalized on the front pages of newspapers the personalities who played a small or big role in local affairs but also the political situation that prevailed each time on the island.

Of particular interest is the first newspaper published in 1830 in Crete by the Egyptian Administration. It is about “Vakayi Giridiye” (the title is rendered in Greek as Cretan Journal), which was written in Greek and Egyptian languages.

For about two centuries, the Cretan press has followed the course of the mega-island through turbulent but also smooth periods.

The exhibition, which unfolds for the first time the history of the Place and of the Local Press, is co-organized by:
– The Organization for Culture and Development of Rivers, the “Governor”
-The Union of Editors of Daily Newspapers of Peloponnese – Epirus – Islands
As well :
– The Region of Crete and
– The Municipality of Hersonissos

Manuscripts
The space also exhibits two historical relics, which belong to the collection of the press museum of ESIEPIN, namely the signed letter of Theodoros Kolokotronis as well as the resolution of the 3rd National Assembly in Troizina in 1827, by which Ioannis Kapodistrias is invited to come to Greece and take over the governance of the country.

Programs
At the same time, in a specially designed room, actions and targeted educational programs are implemented – free of charge – for students, so that they can come into contact with archival material and understand what news means and why newspapers are “sources” for the past and knowledge. To see the changes in the transmission of news and information over time, with manuscripts, print and digital technology.
A special program for students that combines knowledge and play.
