“It’s the pool of the Hilton hotel with the all-white Lycabettus in the background. A sunny day, tourists lying down sunbathing, executives in shirts and ties resting, a condition of luxurious everyday life in a peaceful springtime Athens. I was wondering, is it possible? Tanks were passing by, shots were being heard, the police were arresting thousands of people and almost all the country’s political leadership, stadiums and detention centers were filling up. Were there people relaxing in a pool in the middle of a coup?” writes, among others, Nikos Belavilas, who notes:

The image of the Hilton pool on April 21, 1967, shows the other side of the drama, those who enjoyed the luxurious life in the seven years.”
