The mayor of Ioannina, T. Begas, delivered a message on the occasion of the 57th anniversary of the junta coup on April 21, 1967.

The mayor’s message:

April 21 is a day we must not forget, a day that reminds us that we must be constantly vigilant in order to preserve our freedom and strengthen democratic institutions.

On this day, the shadows of dictatorship fell heavily over our country. The voice of the people was stifled, liberties curtailed, and democracy retreated before the terror of oppression.

Let us never forget the hard battles fought to regain our freedom. Let’s stand by our values, let’s defend democracy and the right of speech.

Especially nowadays, extreme voices and perceptions that underlie actions against freedom and democracy, not only lurk but are beginning to be heard again.

The snake’s egg is hatching and it is the duty of all of us to shield our democracy as best we can.

The upcoming European elections give us the opportunity to send a resounding message of support for democracy, by voting for democratic parties, isolating the extreme and divisive voices, which are unfortunately also emerging in our country.

Let us never allow the dark pages of our history to repeat themselves. Let’s work together for a future where freedom and democracy are non-negotiable values.

Let us never forget the value of freedom. Let’s continue the fight for a just and solidarity society.

A society that respects everyone’s right to express themselves and live freely, within the framework of the basic principles of democracy.
