The Board of Directors of the Agiasos Reading Room, continuing its efforts to restore the theater hall, proceeded with the following actions:
President Kleanthis Koromilas met Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Kalloni and in the presence of Lesvos Member of Parliament Mr. Charalambos Athanassios he explained the problem to him asking for his intervention so that a solution could be found.
Also, the president Kleanthis Koromilas had an extensive discussion with the Minister of Immigration and Asylum Mr. Dimitris Kairides on the subject of the Reading Room and a possible funding from the Ministry of Immigration.
The president Kleanthis Koromilas delivered to the Prime Minister’s adviser Mr. Thanasis Nezis a letter from the Board of Directors. , which we publish.

Dear Prime Minister,
On the occasion of your visit today to the island of Lesvos, we are addressing you personally with this letter, to expose to you the problem that has occupied our Spiritual Center for seven years now, without a solution being found despite our many, persistent and painstaking efforts
A LITTLE HISTORY
The Reading Room is a spiritual-cultural Association, a Legal Entity of Private Law, founded in 1894 and operating continuously until today.
It has approximately 2000 square meters of covered spaces: Library, Folklore Museum, Theater, classrooms.
Today it operates music, theater, art and dance departments with over 200 members, a lending library, Folklore Museum, Art Gallery.
In January 2017, after heavy and prolonged snowfall, the roof of the theater caved in and the theater hall was completely destroyed (seats, electromechanical equipment, projectors, etc.). It should be noted that this particular theater was one of the best in the Aegean.
In 2020, the required studies (architectural, static, electromechanical) were drawn up and approved and all the required permits were issued.
The total budget of the project amounts to 850,000 euros. The title of the project is “Renovation, fixing works of the event space of Agiasos Reading Room, Municipality of Mytilini”.
In September 2023, a decision was issued by the General Secretariat of the Aegean and Island Policy (G.G. AI. N.P.) (prot number 3151/29-09-2023 A.D.A. 6Ζ054653ΠΟ-61 ψ) for the financing of the Municipality Mytilini with the amount of 240,000 euros, for the execution of part of the project. This financing complements the financing of the main project by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food – LEADER program of Lesbos. For bureaucratic reasons, the funding never took place, resulting in our withdrawal from LEADER, since the stipulated deadlines were not met.
We are essentially at zero right now.
For the execution of the project, a competent body of the central government (Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Immigration and Asylum, G.G. AI. N.P.) should finance the execution of the project. Already both the previous municipal authority of Mr. Efstratiou Kytellis and the current one of Mr. Panagiotis Christofas agree that the execution of the project should be done by the competent technical service of the Municipality of Mytilini.
