Nomiki Komotini qualified for the first time in the ELMC mock trial international competition

The Law School of Demokriteio University of Thrace participated for the first time in the European Law Moot Court Competition (ELMC), the most prestigious annual international mock trial competition in the field of European law.

The Komotini Law School team was represented by undergraduate students Gavriel Kokkini as Attorney General, Athanasia Maglara as Plaintiff, Garifalia Mouka as Legal Counsel and Areti Evangelia Nakou as Defendant.

The 4 undergraduate students, under the academic supervision of Assistant Professor Mrs. Virginia Tzortzis, after successfully competing in the written phase of the competition through the submission of essays, qualified for the Regional Final held at the University of Vienna from February 15 to 18, 2024.

The international competition European Law Moot Court has been held since 1989 in which undergraduate and postgraduate students from more than 80 universities in Europe and the USA participate. It is a mock trial during which contestants are asked to develop a written and orally their arguments in English and French and judged by prominent figures in European Union law who take on the role of judge.

This year’s ELMC case revolved around complex issues, concerning the jurisdiction of the Court of Justice of the European Union in the framework of the European Union’s Common Foreign and Security Policy and the possible role of national courts, as well as the application of the recently adopted Regulation on foreign subsidies.
