The day after tomorrow, Tuesday, the University of Macedonia is organizing an open informational event aimed at professionals in the real estate market in order to communicate the Foundation’s interest in the search for four building facilities in order to satisfy its immediate housing needs. The facilities in which PAMAK operates were built more than thirty years ago. Under different circumstances, with fewer Departments, fewer professors and administrative staff, fewer students. Over the years, PAMAK grew, as a result of which it suffocated in the existing building complex.

Although there were proposals and solutions from time to time, they did not bear fruit as the State had other priorities.

For example, the former 424 General Military Hospital, which is located right next to PAMAK, was an ideal solution for the Foundation’s housing expansion, however, the State preferred to convert a part of it into apartments in order to house military personnel, while the rest remains vacant. It’s a matter of priorities.

Opposite PAMAK, at the junction of K. Karamanli and 3rd of September, is the plot of Agia Fotini, with an area of approximately eleven acres. Abandoned for decades, enclosed, grassed, which also belongs to the National Defense Fund. This could also be used in order for PAMAK to build a part of the facilities it needs there. And as the university administration says, it would be ideal if the spaces it is looking for were close to the Foundation’s current facilities, for obvious reasons that certainly don’t need to be explained. But even in this case the State has other priorities.

The abandoned plot of Agia Fotini, for which no one showed the slightest interest, suddenly became sought after as it has also entered the bazaar that is taking place around the case of the reconstruction of the TIF. Because the numbers do not work out so that after the reconstruction of the current site of the Exhibition there will be enough green space left, some people threw the idea of including the eleven acres of the neighboring plot of Agia Fotini into the equation. In this way, the green space would grow, at least on paper, in order to overcome the objections of those who disagree with TIF’s delivery to real estate.

And the very simple question that arises in this case is the following: Why is the plot of Agia Foteini not given to PAMAK so that it can expand its building facilities in an area adjacent to the present and the eleven acres of green space of the TIF to be saved from the cancellation of part of the redevelopment plan which includes, in addition to an exhibition and conference center, the reconstruction of a hotel, as well as a shopping and business center? The answer to this… naive question is the same: it is purely a matter of priorities. For some, meeting the requirements of contractors comes before meeting the needs of the university. As was the case a few years ago, the housing needs of the military from those of PAMAK.
