The Parthenon Sculptures must be “shared” with Greece, the mayor of the British capital pointed out

“It would be wonderful if people could admire the Parthenon Sculptures in their natural environment, without having to come to London to see them,” London Mayor Sadiq Khan said in an interview with a Greek newspaper, while he argued that the emblematic treasures of the British Museum should be “shared” with Greece. He also praised George Osborne, the former Tory chancellor who chairs the museum, for his “will” to reach a deal.

It should be noted that the mayor’s position in question comes almost two weeks before the mayoral election and was criticized by Conservative sources who accused him of trying to divert attention after the issues of crime and transport.

It is recalled that the ongoing dispute between Greece and Britain over the ownership of the Parthenon Sculptures was in the spotlight last November, when Rishi Sunak canceled the talks with his Greek counterpart at the last minute.

Speaking to the newspaper “Ta Nea”, Mr Khan said: “I like the fact that Greeks come here to see these works of art, the marbles, the history. But wouldn’t it be great if people didn’t have to come to London to see them?’ And he added that “they could see them in their own environment”.

The two-term Labor mayor added: “I think it cannot be beyond the ingenuity of man to find an arrangement where these really precious, priceless Marbles can be shared.”
