The authorities of Larnaca are eager for the arrival of historical and recognized academic institutions of Greece, since this will give life to the city and the province and create additional development prospects in a sector they wish to invest in.

Recently, officials from both the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA) and the National Technical University of Athens were in Larnaca investigating the possibility of using Larnaca as their base for the creation of Branches.

In the case of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), the interest is characterized as warm. Valid information from philenews.com states that a delegation of the Technical University of Athens was in Larnaca at the beginning of April and had meetings both with the mayor of Larnaca and with other local institutions and actors of the city. Their desire is to create a branch based in Larnaca with many of the Polytechnic’s schools.

In fact, a space was proposed to the delegation in which the NTUA annex could be housed. This is the building of the Community Council of Oroklini, which will be a geographical division of the Municipality of Larnaca from the summer. The large spaces of the modern building, its location, as well as the fact that it can be granted since all municipal services will be offered by the Municipality of Larnaca, were the main reasons that led to its selection. The building facilities seem to have initially satisfied the officials of the academic institution of Greece, who took plans and photographs from the premises of the Community Council. NTUA officials were preliminarily satisfied with the facilities, with the fact that Oroklini is located near Larnaca airport, as well as with central road axes, but also with the development prospects of the wider area after the relocation of the oil tanks.

NTUA has not yet announced which of its nine schools, some of which have very high credentials worldwide, it wishes to bring to our country.

According to information, NTUA officials already had a first contact with the President of the Republic, who, without naming the specific university institution, publicly confirmed, during the recent inauguration of the Mediterranean Artists’ Park, the interest of Greek universities in the Larnaca and beyond.

As far as the National Kapodistrian University of Athens is concerned, a delegation was found about two months ago in Larnaca, since it also wishes to create a branch in Cyprus. The interest of the public HEIs of Greece is not accidental in this period, but is related to the passing of the legislation for the establishment of private universities in the country and the provision of the possibility to the public Higher Education Institutions to create branches abroad.

The authorities of Larnaca, however, ardently desire the arrival of historical and recognized academic institutions of Greece, since such a thing will breathe life into the city and the province and will create additional development prospects in a sector they wish to invest.

In fact, the Local Plan for the area of the former refineries, which is located near Oroklini, prioritizes the creation of Higher Education institutions as well as student residences. Already in the wider area are two of the most important private universities of Larnaca (American University of Cyprus and UCLan Cyprus), with the addition of new ones being the goal. It is no coincidence that the Municipality of Larnaca wishes to lease land from the state to create a student campus in the area of the former refinery, but also the building of the Cyprus Petroleum Storage Company (KETAP) located on the site, in order to house a university faculty.
