The regional council is worried about the abolition of the six departments of the University of Western Macedonia. Municipal authorities like Eordaia and Florina are also worried. But as it turns out, the only quiet one is the University of Western Macedonia. Besides, since Niki Kerameos took over, they were suspended and from 2019 until today, no action has been taken to create them under the responsibility of the University.
What the regional governor Giorgos Kasapidis mentioned about the reassuring rector is typical. Of course, the University is not going to issue a protest resolution for their abolition, since it has not even expressed its interest in their operation for so many years. The only exception is the Marketing Department in Grevena with a corresponding proposal to abolish another existing department of the School of Economic Sciences.
On February 17, 2021, the chancellor had spoken about the role of the University in the post-lignite era in the regional council saying that “it needs to have a critical size in terms of number of departments and students and it should not shrink”. However, it is shrinking and this does not worry the University itself at all.
We are still waiting for the feasibility studies for the six departments that were never done. And his planning for the new attractive objects that will also bring students to our area.
