A majority resolution, with 28 votes in favor and 1 against, was issued by the Komotini municipal council during its meeting on Wednesday, November 8, regarding the war in the Middle East.
In the resolution, signed by the president of the municipal council Cleopatra Stogiannidou and the Mayor of Komotini Yiannis Garanis, it is stated:
“In Komotini today, November 8, 2023, Wednesday, the Municipal Council of Komotini, which convened in a regular meeting following a legal invitation by its President, Cleopatra Stogiannidou, decides by majority (by a vote of 28 in favor against 1 against of those counted) to issue the following resolution:
The Municipal Council of Komotini expresses its abhorrence for the conflict in the Middle East, its reasonable solidarity with the Israeli and Palestinian civilians and its absolute commitment to international law, as it was reflected in the UN resolutions that have remained on paper for many years.
We respond to the propaganda from both sides and the warmongering responses that reach our homeland that peace will not come with the elimination of one or the other people but with a just and functional resolution of the longest-standing problem on the international stage, the Middle East.
In this context, we also hope that our country, which has good relations with Israel and the Palestinians, will be able to contribute to an armistice and finally to a definitive peace for the good of all the peoples of the Eastern Mediterranean.
This decision was numbered 272/2023. Done, decided and signed.”
