The situation in Corfu with teacher vacancies has reached an impasse. Dozens of vacancies still exist in all Secondary schools in all specialties. There are schools all over Corfu, where students do 4 hours and 5 hours for almost the whole week. And no one knows yet when the next phase of recruitment of deputies will take place.
This is what ELME Corfu points out in its announcement and adds: “In addition, “OLME is holding the students hostage”, according to the vulgar sketch of Kathimerini. The -otherwise- “lalist” newspaper does not have a word to say about the thousands of gaps that exist throughout Greece”.
The announcement of ELME Corfu
The situation in Corfu with the gaps has reached an impasse. Dozens of vacancies still exist in all Secondary schools in all specialties. There are schools all over Corfu, where students do 4 hours and 5 hours for almost the whole week. And no one knows yet when the next phase of recruitment of deputies will take place.
The Ministry of Education, instead of looking to cover the gaps, puts the burden once again on the teachers, targeting the educational rights of the students. So in a school, instead of the children seeing the teacher come in and give them a normal lesson, they will see him doing them once every two weeks or coming in for fewer hours than normal, eg instead of doing 4 hours of maths a week, he will do 2 or 3 hours. In another school they force the teachers to take three hours of overtime each, in order to fill the teacher gap that exists. The ministry is trying to cover the thousands of gaps that exist “from the elements”, disregarding not only the labor rights of teachers, not only the right of fellow substitutes to work, but also the educational rights of students, who arrive at Christmas and have no teacher to enter their classroom.
All these problems would not exist, if all the governments that have passed so far, made the necessary permanent appointments, so that all the teachers were in their place on September 1st.
We call on colleagues and the Teachers’ Associations to condemn these practices of the Administration and not to accept its verbal orders!
The Board of Directors of ELME Corfu requires:
· The new phase of the deputies should take place immediately.
· Permanentization of all substitute teachers.
· Cover all gaps in one phase.
· No mandatory overtime for any teacher
PS: Otherwise, “OLME is holding the students hostage”, according to Kathimerini’s vulgar sketch. The -otherwise- “cool” newspaper has nothing to say about the thousands of gaps that exist all over Greece.
