Disturbing findings on the country’s dry soil conditions and signs of water scarcity. We are in the month of November but the temperatures are reminiscent of… summer.

Mild or moderate drought conditions were experienced in October 2023 by 38% of the country’s land area, according to the National Observatory of Athens and meteo.gr.

Central and eastern Macedonia and especially Thrace are experiencing drought conditions, which are characterized as moderate and in places extreme. Mild drought conditions occur in areas of central and eastern Peloponnese, eastern Sterea (including Attica), central and southern Evia, as well as some Aegean islands.

Also, slightly drier conditions were observed in some areas of central and western Macedonia.

It is recalled that on Saturday, November 4, a pan-European November temperature record was set in Crete. On that day, 51 weather stations in the country recorded temperatures above 30 degrees. The pan-European record for November was in Sissi Lassithiou with 35.1 degrees Celsius!

Characteristic of the “summer” water shortage conditions was the fire in Karysto over the weekend, which burned for at least 24 hours, with difficulties in extinguishing it as the ground was dry and favored the spread of the fire.
