The Greek office of Greenpeace submits proposals for the revival of agriculture in Thessaly, an area valuable for the overall production of the country, which focus on the well-being of people and the environment. The proposals will be submitted at a press conference organized in Larissa, at the Joist Innovation Park, in the FutureLearning Lab room, on November 14, 2023 at 11:00 am.
Speakers at the press conference will be:
- Elena Danali, Sustainable Agriculture Campaign Manager, Greenpeace Greek Office
- Ilias Kantaros, agronomist, Greenpeace scientific advisor
The recent unprecedented disaster in Thessaly brings the country’s leadership before the great responsibility for relief to the affected and regeneration of the region. The critical issue is the direction that planning will follow: respect and urgent support for those affected, avoiding wrong policies that have been followed in the area for years and leaving it unfortified, the shift to practices that protect the residents as well as food production us.
Greenpeace’s proposals prioritize people who have been affected by extreme weather (the result of the climate crisis, the lack of prevention and indifference to its prevention) and are struggling to rebuild their lives on a more solid and resilient basis.
The crisis we are experiencing must be a springboard to turn one of the biggest disasters into an opportunity to build a better tomorrow, with benefits for people, the local community, and the environment. Starting from Thessaly, the radical restructuring of the agri-food model of the entire country needs to be planned, with an emphasis on resilience (immediate and long-term) and biodiversity.
Greenpeace’s Greek office is committed to pressuring the government to make the required changes, while seeking even more alliances with the local community and all stakeholders for the implementation of real and sustainable solutions. Through our actions and expertise, we aim to contribute dynamically and substantially to the regeneration that the people of Thessaly need so much, and we start by announcing all of the above at the press conference.
