Residents filed a request to relocate the village to a safer area due to frequent floods
The residents of Metamorfosi Karditsa expected to be the first climate refugees in Greece as they decided to testify request to relocate their village.
Metamorfosi Karditsa is located at the lowest point of the plain of Thessaly and it has been hit many times by devastating floods.
The last major disaster, which literally submerged the village in the mud, was caused by bad weather Daniel and Elias, bringing despair to the 234 inhabitants of the village.
It should be noted that the village was also submerged in the mud in 1994with residents pointing out that their stay in the area is now impossible as they cannot recover from the constant devastating floods that threaten their lives and survival.
THE Metamorphosis community and while life is impossible under present circumstances to return, he proposed to him municipality of Palama the relocation of the village in a new area, in an area of 200 acres between Palamas and Kalyvakiaarea which belongs to the municipality.
The matter of relocation will be put to a referendum with the residents proposing that some basic work be done to the houses currently left in Metamorfosi in order to be used during the residents’ agricultural work.
It should be noted that the village has 160 houses even with the relocation 90% of residents reportedly agree.
