36 of the 37 University departments across the country, whose operation had been suspended, according to reports from central websites, are to be abolished by a Law that will be submitted to the Parliament, including five departments at the University of Western Macedonia.
These are departments that were founded by the former Minister of Education Konstantinos Gavroglou and whose opening was suspended during the tenure of the Minister of Education Nikis Kerameos, while, always according to the publication, the matter is brought to the Parliament by the current Minister of Education Kyriakos Pierrakakis.
According to the relevant table of the Ministry of Education and as far as the University of Western Macedonia is concerned, the departments that are abolished are Speech Therapy in Ptolemaida, School of Food Science and Nutrition in Florina, Marketing in Grevena, Audiovisual Media in Kozani, and Cinema in Florina.
The argument from the Government’s side is that the departments were established by Mr. Gavroglou for purely vote-seeking reasons without prior planning and sufficient documentation.
The only file that was adopted and will be included by the Minister of Education in the new Law, is that of the Department of Public Health Policies of the University of Western Attica, which merges with another department of the same Institution in order to preserve the historical character of the School of Public Health that was founded in 1929 by El. Venizelo.
