Intense bad weather will hit the country on Thursday with dangerous phenomena, heavy rains, hail but also heavy snow even in cities.

The EMY has already issued an emergency notice of worsening weather, the Fire Services in an emergency notification called on citizens to limit their movements, while a 112 message has been sent to several areas (Eptanisa, Larissa, etc.) of the country.

According to the latest prognostic data of the National Observatory of Athens/, the low barometric pressure affecting our country is expected to strengthen, causing severe bad weather on Thursday 26/01.

More detail, heavy rains and storms will initially manifest in the Ionian Islands and the western mainland, which will locally be accompanied by increased electrical activity and hailstorms. Local rainfall will occur in the rest of the country. The strong phenomena will progressively move further east and will affect the entire country. The areas that will be affected include both the prefecture Attica and her city of Athens, as well as the prefecture and the city of Thessaloniki. The phenomena will be less in Crete and until late afternoon in Thrace.

According to the classification of the precipitation episode (RPI), which is implemented by the Meteo unit of the National Observatory of Athens, the precipitation episode is classified as Category 3 (Significant).

The forecast map below shows the estimated distribution of rain (rains/snow) during the three hours 17:00-20:00 on Thursday.


Dense snowfalls will occur in the continental highlands as well as in semi-mountainous areas of Northwest, Central and Northern Greece (indicative altitudes above 600 meters and above 300-400 meters in Western Macedonia). Snowfall is expected in several cities of Western Macedonia. The snowfall in places will continue even after the change of day. The forecast maps that follow show the estimated cumulative snow heights until the morning of Friday 01/27.

Fire Department Representative: Limit your movements

The press representative of the Fire Brigade, Epipyragos Ioannis Artofios from the National Coordination Center for Operations and Crisis Management, in an emergency briefing on the upcoming dangerous weather phenomena, warned citizens to limit their movements to the absolutely necessary.

As he pointed out, until Friday, heavy rains and storms accompanied by strong winds and snowfall are expected.

The phenomena will initially manifest in the west-central and south and will gradually expand towards the north-east of the country.

For this reason, at noon on Wednesday, a broad coordinating meeting was held with the participation of the political leadership of the Ministry and the physical leadership of the Fire Brigade, all the co-competent agencies, but also with a scientific team of meteorologists and hydrologists.

Where message 112 was sent

Following the meeting, a warning message was issued by 112 to its residents Kefalonia, Ithaca, Lefkada, Zakynthos, Aitoloakarnania, Achaia and Ilia,her Corinth, Argolis, Laconia, Messinia, Eastern Arcadia, Karditsa and Trikala. Later, a third warning message was sent from 112 to her areas of Western Macedonia where heavy snowfall is expected.


“In any case, with a strong recommendation to limit movement to the absolutely necessary, during the occurrence of weather phenomena” said the representative of the Fire Department, who also informed that heavy rains and storms are expected on Thursday afternoon in Attica as well, where he also recommended restriction of movement.

Depending on the evolution of the phenomena and the information we will receive from the National Meteorological Service, other messages will be sent from 112, if deemed necessary.

A broad coordinating meeting will also be held on Thursday, to re-evaluate the course of the bad weather.


“All the Civil Protection forces have been put on the highest level of readiness and vigilance to deal with any emergency. The Fire Services of the areas where the phenomena are expected to occur, have been placed in a state of increased readiness and further escalation if required, in order to deal with any problems immediately,” Mr. Artophios emphasized.

We strongly advise citizens to be especially careful and follow basic self-protection instructions:

  • Limit your travel to absolutely necessary during severe weather
  • Always keep in mind, in the event of flooding, to move to the highest parts of the house.
  • Do not for any reason cross rivers, streams or flooded roads, on foot or by vehicle. For no reason.
