John Malkovich will be on the Main Stage of the Onassis Foundation Roof for the first time with the performance “In the loneliness of the cotton fields”.

THE John Malkovich returns to Greece again to appear for the first time in Roof of the Onassis Foundation. We remind you that last October the famous actor was on his stage Herodei with the project “The Music Critic”while he was also given a tour of Acropolis Museum sending his own message for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures.

A breath before turning 70, John Malkovich and the multi-award-winning Lithuanian actress Ingeborga Dapkunaite will present one of the most mysterious works of the modern repertoire “In the loneliness of the cotton fields”, directed by Timofey Kulyabin. The Main Stage of the Roof becomes the first stop of his international tour.

This is not the first time that Malkovich has co-starred with distinguished Lithuanian actress Ingeborga Dapkunaite. One could say that they are an artistic couple, having at least ten collaborations in theater and cinema. The musical The Giacomo Variations (which was later transferred to the cinema, directed by Michael Sturminger) and the Russian film About Love are considered milestones in their joint journey.

A child of the Chicago and New York stage – before Hollywood absorbed him into some of the most fiery and demonic “villain” roles in 80s and 90s film history – Malkovich selectively returns to the theater, both as a director and as an actor. In his first capacity, he has been awarded the Molière Award (France) and the Milton Schulman Award (UK).

The show

Hi-tech cameras constantly monitor the heroes of the play, gradually revealing what is hidden behind their words and evasions: an old case of pedophilia. “We are doing a show about a dark lust, punishable and cognizable as a crime in any society according to the Law. There are two actors on stage but, in essence, only one person. Everything happens in his subconscious,” says the director.

Through long and suggestive monologues, the two characters of “Loneliness” engage in an elliptical linguistic duel, where both realism and poetry nestle. As the 37-year-old director Timofey Kulyabin observes, “there are two actors in our play, but only one character. We will spend most of our time in the subconscious, in the nightmares of a person who will never appear on stage. Instead, we will see two figures fighting each other in a tense, emotional and complex dialogue. It is one person’s dialogue with his own hidden desires and fears… It is the story of human complexity, which is something undesirable, inappropriate, almost obscene. This world creates inner discord, disharmony that kills the person from within like some deadly disease».

The play “In the loneliness of cotton fields” was staged for the first time in France in 1987 by Patrice Chereau and in Greece in 1995, at the Theater of the South (Theatro Amore), directed by Roulas Paterakis. Michael Marmarinos played the role of the dealer and Akylas Karazisis played the role of the customer.

The book “In the solitude of the plains with cotton” is published in Greek, translated by Dimitris Dimitriadis, by Agra publications.
