Trikala: The first city in Greece to acquire robot distributors

--

Another pan-European pilot action is being implemented in Trikala. The Municipality of Trikkaia and e-trikala AE started the movement in the Mill of the Elves, of Yape robot.

In the first phase, the robots carry the letters of the little children, from the Elf Post Office, to Santa Claus. In the next few days, the Yapes (5 in total) will move in another environment, with urban traffic: on the pedestrian street of Asklipio, in the center of Trikala.

Thus, after the Driverless Bus and a number of other European pilot programs for micromobility implemented in Trikala, it’s time to test micro-transportation within cities as well.

In fact, in the technical name of the program, the route is recorded as “The last mile”, meaning exactly:

  • the use of micro-transport vehicles – small-scale deliveries,
  • in the city center,
  • under normal conditions,
  • from a fleet of vehicles.

This originality and innovation, for the first time in all of Europe, is implemented in Trikala.

How does it work

This robot it is “trained” with a laser and a mapped route, not just moving in a predetermined frame, but also “reading” any obstacles. Therefore, it will be able to proceed based on pedestrian traffic, bicycles and, in general, unspecified factors.

So, after the letters to Santa Claus, in the next phase, he will carry newspapers and products sold in kiosks.

The aim is to test, in what conditions, issues of transporting products in city centers can be solved, taking into account traffic, measuring times, electrical loads and all technical data.

Therefore, conclusions will be drawn about the way and scope of using similar robots in an urban environment, with pedestrians, vehicles, mobile obstacles and not only in closed shopping centers or in controlled areas, where these robots have already made their appearance.

Program and features

This pan-European originality is implemented within the framework of the European SHOW program, with Yape being Italian-made (from Milan) and with the University of Genoa as the scientific partner.

The vehicle is electric, charges in a very short time, “sees” through a laser, has speakers, can transmit an audio message, has a qr code (which the recipient of the product will scan on the mobile phone and receive the product), gives the possibility to monitor its progress by the recipient, and is monitored online by the program operators, who can intervene, checking all the data.
