Friday 3 and Saturday 4 February 2023, at 20:00, in the “Andreas and Maria Kalokairinou” Hall

The composer Dimitris Maramis signs the pioneering, historical and political opera Eleftherios Venizelos, the new production of the Cultural Conference Center of Heraklion presented in a world premiere at the “Andreas and Maria Kalokairinou” Hall, under the musical direction of the leading chief musician Myron Michailides.

The libretto is signed by the poet Sotiris Trivizas. The historical facts are based on the biography “Eleftherios Venizelos, the man, the leader” by Nikolaos Emm. Papadakis (Papadis). The original opera Eleftherios Venizelos is staged at PSKI under the signature of the internationally renowned Swiss director Guy Montavon and the Athens Philharmonic Orchestra.
With a bold operatic composition, the composer approaches the greatest leader of modern Greece, Eleftherios Venizelos, who shaped the modern Greek state. The dramatic material of the opera is drawn mainly from the turbulent historical period 1910-1923 highlighting the shocking historical events of the time, such as the recovery of the country, the Balkan Wars, the National Division, the Asia Minor Disaster, the Treaty of Lausanne, the Greek-Turkish friendship. The victories and defeats, the hatreds and passions, the human side and the loves of the intelligent, visionary, bold Cretan and world-radiating leader, parade in a stormy musical composition and illuminate an entire and turbulent era. A work as relevant as ever, as the echo of its theme reaches today (2023, one hundred years since the Treaty of Lausanne).

With this work Dimitris Maramis completes his Cretan trilogy: Erotokritos, Captain Michalis, Eleftherios Venizelos and the corresponding conceptual themes: love and dream, freedom and revolution, vision and leadership.

Four important and renowned lyrical performers are participating: Angelos Chondrogiannis (baritone), Antonis Koronaios (tenor), Maria Kokka (soprano), Angeliki Kathariou (mezzo-soprano), as well as the Choral Ensemble of Heraklion under the direction of Yiannis Kiagiadakis. The sets and costumes are designed by Anna Machairianaki.
With the support of the “Eleftherios K. Venizelos” National Research and Studies Foundation.

Composer Dimitris Maramis has marked an important path and achieved artistic success with his large-scale contemporary musical theater works: Erotokritos (commissioned by the National Opera, 2017), Haunted (commissioned by the Athens Concert Hall, 2019), Captain Michalis (commissioned by the Region of Crete / produced by DIPETHE of Crete, 2021) and the folk oratorio Palingenesia (commissioned by the Region of Central Greece to celebrate the Greek revolution of 1821). He has received commissions from cultural organizations such as the National Opera, the Athens Concert Hall, the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, the Camerata-Orchestra of Friends of Music, the Shelter of Letters & Arts (“Hellenic Design”), the National Theatre, the State Theater of the North Greece, while he has presented his works in the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Belgium. Since 2018, he is the artistic director of the Delphi Festival “To Lalon Ydor”.
