West Macedonia: Dead animal collection program launched – What does it include?

The Region of Western Macedonia has proceeded with the implementation of the program for the collection and management of all kinds of dead animals and confiscated products and it concerns the breeders of productive animals (cattle, sheep, goat, pig and poultry farms).

The program includes:

  • The collection for management and incineration of the following dead animals inside and outside livestock holdings and includes:
  • Carcasses of cattle, goats and sheep, found dead on or off the livestock holding, from which additional brain tissue samples are taken, namely from cattle over 24 or 48 months of age (depending on their country of original origin) and from goats and sheep over 18 months of age, according to the current Surveillance, Control and Eradication Programs of Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies, for which there is a regime of financial support.
  • Carcasses of dead cattle and goats and sheep that do not belong to the animals of the previous paragraph, which are found dead inside or outside livestock holdings.
  • Carcasses of dead pigs, equines and birds from registered holdings.

The collection for management and cremation of other dead animals, namely:

  • Carcasses of all ages of animals found dead along the National Road Network or on Public or Municipal lands. Excludes dead animals from animal shelters, zoos and those living on privately owned premises.

It should be noted that breeders, owners or responsible personnel of livestock holdings should address the existence of dead animals, inside or outside their breeding, directly to the program implementing body, to the telephone center on a 24-hour basis.

Necessary declaration details are:

  • Animal Identification Number, Farm Code, Owner’s VAT number.
  • The responsible maintainers or managers of the road network as well as other citizens should contact the program’s implementing body, the call center on a 24-hour basis, to locate dead animals.
