The Turkish constitution provides for the postponement of elections due to war or a state of emergency. Will Tayyip Erdogan attempt the unthinkable and attack Greece?
There is great concern in Athens about the actions of the Erdoğan regime, which seems determined not to de-escalate the tension with Greece and Cyprus in the slightest.
A few months before the crucial elections in the neighboring countryTayyip Erdogan feels his chair creaking, with the Turkish people turning their backs on him and the international community now realizing how insolvent he is.
As we have pointed out, the Turkish president eagerly seeks a victory which will re-empower him to his domestic audience. How will he achieve this? Demonizing Greece and highlighting it as the great enemy of the Turkish nation.
Only that Greece spoils his plans, since it is neither Syria nor Libya, which he will threaten with war and will not prepare for an immediate response. He himself knows this, but he is determined for everything and will certainly not hesitate to provoke serious crisis with Greece in order to achieve his great goal, which is to remain in power.
What does a severe crisis mean? It means gross provocation, it means tension on the ground, which, in addition to the unforeseen consequences, could be a reason to postpone the direct appeal to the polls in Turkey. How will this happen? Tayyip Erdogan will invoke the Turkish constitution, as it was revised in 2017, and two articles provide for postponing elections from six months to a year due to war or a state of emergency. In both cases, as “Kathimerini” reports, the Turkish president’s powers are extended even further.
Turkey’s involvement in the war in Syria or in Armenia cannot be a reason for an emergency, unlike of course a conflict in the Aegean or the Eastern Mediterranean with Greece as its rival.
Political and military leadership in Athens are well aware that Erdogan is capable of attempting the… and to attack Greece, trying to get as many benefits as possible. For this reason, Greek diplomacy is constantly on the move, constantly informing the ally about its neighbor’s practices, while the Armed Forces are in a state of increased vigilance throughout the Aegean and the Evros, ready to respond to any action that may be attempted.
