Tension was noted at noon in Exarchia as the residents came face to face with the police, reacting to the removal of the historic lamppost statue from the square as part of the works for the construction of the metro station.

According to the Police, five arrests were made, two of which turned into arrests, one on the charge of insubordination and the other on the charge of releasing a prisoner.

Since the morning, residents of the area had gathered at the site, who are protesting the construction of a metro station in the square and who were asking that the statue not be removed. Posts on Twitter showed residents lying in the street in front of police in protest, while other users reported arrests.

Finally, the statue that was a trademark of Exarchia Square was removed and taken to a place where it will be kept temporarily. There have been reports, according to which it had been decided to transfer it to another part of Athens. However, according to Athens city councilor Giorgos Apostolopoulos, it was finally decided to relocate temporarily and then return to the square.
