New innovative treatments in hematological malignancies

A scientific two-day conference on hematological malignancies entitled “Towards a new era of diagnosis and treatment”, is being organized by the Hellenic Cancer Federation in Larissa the day after tomorrow, Friday and Saturday, September 23-24. The work of the two-day conference that will be held with

hybrid format at the Divani Palace hotel is held under the auspices of the Region of Thessaly, the Municipality of Larissa, the Hellenic Hematology Society (EAE) and the Medical Association of Larissa “Ippokrates”. Hematologic malignancies are estimated to constitute approximately 10% of all neoplasms. Leukemias, lymphomas and myelomas are the most common forms of hematological malignancies. Although they usually affect older people, some forms, especially leukemia, prove to be particularly dangerous for younger people.
At the same time, the new innovative treatments have resulted, within the last 30 years, in the overall survival of patients with hematologic malignancies having doubled. This fact makes patients’ access to new sophisticated treatment options even more imperative for their survival and quality of life.
The theme of the two-day conference will focus on prevention, the recognition of the symptoms of the most common forms of hematological malignancies, the important developments in the field of treatments and the particularities of hematological malignancies at young ages. In addition, the two-day conference will focus on the social and economic burden caused by hematologic malignancies for patients and their families, as well as the implementation of health policies that are necessary for their effective treatment, at national and European level, in accordance with the European Plan for the fight against cancer.
The patient-centered approach as a driver for improving the quality of life of patients with hematological malignancies and the contribution of health professionals to this process will be the central topic of a round table discussion with the participation of the patients themselves.
Indicative topics of the two-day conference will include:
* The main forms of hematological malignancies, epidemiology, symptoms and treatment options
* The newest diagnostic and therapeutic methods, the assistance of personalized medicine, treatments with CAR-T cells and lymphocytes and the contribution of clinical studies to the treatment of hematological malignancies
* The specifics of treating hematological malignancies at young ages and the operation of the National Registry of Childhood Neoplasms
* The policies in Europe and Greece for the effective treatment of hematological malignancies and the deficiencies in the care provided to patients with hematological malignancies in our country
* Experiential experiences of patients with hematological malignancies and ways to improve their quality of life – Round table
Finally, the two-day event will include a special section dedicated to the “Doctor for All” Program, with the aim of informing the public about the changes that are imminent from the implementation of the Program, the advantages that are expected to exist for citizens, the opinion of the medical world, but also to open the debate on the new system of primary health care and the registration of citizens to a personal physician. The two-day conference is aimed at members of cancer patient associations, the general public, but also at policy-makers in the field of health, focusing on the issues of prevention and early diagnosis, methods of treatment and treatment of hematological malignancies, the latest scientific developments and the social -economic effects caused by the appearance of the disease.
The work of the scientific conference will start on Friday 23/9 at 4 pm. with greetings from the vice-president of the Board of Directors of ELLOK, president of the Association of Cancer Patients of Larisa, Ms. Ioanna Karavana, the regional governor of Thessaly, Mr. Kon. Agorasto, the president of the Hellenic Hematology Association (EAE) Mrs. Maria Pagoni and the president of the Hellenic Cancer Federation (HELLOK) Mrs. Kaiti Apostolidou,
Then, until 8 pm, there will be presentations of the special sections of the conference. On Saturday the presentations will start at 9.30 in the morning and will end at 1 in the afternoon.
