Expulsion at his Primary School… Zambeta

The 9th Primary School was rented for years in the Municipality of Egaleo by the heirs of the composer G. Zambeta, who came from the area.

Urgently looking for a solution Municipality of Egaleo to accommodate the 90 students, whose school has been under eviction since yesterday. An emergency municipal council in Aegaleo was scheduled for last night, as the school roof is under the jurisdiction of the local government. The hope of the parents and teachers is to find, even in… and five, a satisfactory solution, since the issue has been pending for two years.

The “school of Zambeta”as most Aigaleotes know it 9th Primary School of their area, was rented for years to the municipality by the heirs of the great composer, who came from the area. Such as Dimitris Koutsomolis explained to “K”., father of a student at the school and secretary of the Association of Parents and Guardians of the Municipality of Aigaleo, the rental contract expired in 2019, but he got a six-month extension. What happened since then, since, according to Mr. Koutsombolis, it had become clear from the side of the owners that they did not want it to continue? Why did we reach yesterday’s eviction?

Speaking to “K” yesterdaythe mayor of Aegaleo Giannis Gikas he said that as of 2020 he had invited the building’s owners to sign a new contract, but they left the matter open. Last year in June, and as the building continued to function as a school and house the 9th grade, the owners asked to be paid. “But since there is no contract, the cash office of the municipality cannot pay rents”, argues Mr. Gikas. A lawsuit was then brought by the owners (and as a legal way to get paid) and both at first and second instance the courts ruled in their favour. Following this, the owners could evict the school.

On Friday a bailiff arrived at the school, sealed the school and yesterday morning the students and their accompanying parents found it closed.

On Friday September 9, i.e. before the start of the school year (Monday September 12), an eviction was attempted by a bailiff following the relevant court decision, due to rent arrears. The expulsion process was temporarily averted. But finally on Friday a bailiff arrived at the school, sealed the school and yesterday morning the students and their accompanying parents found it closed.

Reactions

As Mr. Koutsomolis mentioned, at the beginning of the month the mayor contacted the Association of Parents and Guardians of the 9th Primary School and announced to them that, together with the relevant Directorate of Primary Education, it was decided to relocate to the building of the 14th Primary School in Egaleo. The plan is not accepted by the parents, because there are not enough spaces for the 14th grade to accommodate it with the 9th grade. The only, perhaps, solution is the service at 9 in the afternoon, as was said yesterday by officials of the Ministry of Education, but even this solution will cause reactions.

In particular, in the event that the afternoon service is adopted, it can only be alternated for the students of the two schools, something for which the parents of the 14th grade students have objections. “The municipal council must immediately find a solution”, observes Mr. Dimitris Koutsomolis, as, as he adds, “the students of the school are not attending classes”.
