The Metropolis of Larissa and Tyrnavos and the Greek High School invite you to a journey of knowledge and re-evaluation of our historical moments with the themed performance “Embracing the land of Asia Minor” on Friday, September 23, 2022, at 9 pm, at the Alcazar Garden Theater

A performance full of tension and emotional charge, which will puzzle, teach, fascinate and vibrate the consciousness of the viewer.
A performance, a tribute to the Asia Minor tradition, to the drama of the disaster of 1922 and to the rebirth in the Greek area.

As this year marks a century since the uprooting of the Greek presence in Asia Minor and Eastern Thrace, the Greek High School of Larissa in collaboration with the Holy Metropolis of Larissa and Tyrnavos, on Friday September 23, 2022, at the Alcazar Garden Theater, will revive memories of Asia Minor drawing on the trauma of the 1922 uprooting.

The goal is to keep the memory alive, to preserve in every detail the refugee experience in the memory, personal as well as collective. This drama, which deeply shocked the Greek soul, is imprinted in the popular tradition of Asia Minor. Through music, dance and song, life in the forgotten homelands, the Catastrophe of 1922, the violent displacement, the feeling of loss, nostalgia and the refugee, the integration into the Greek space, the rebirth, the miracle are captured.

Dances and songs, as well as narratives – personal testimonies or literary works, present an idealized image of the refugees’ place of origin, where the homeland, in addition to being “lost”, also becomes “forgotten”. Life there appears dreamy and diametrically opposed to the depressing and gray picture of destruction and refugees.

The performance “Embracing the land of Asia Minor” is the product of research, study, and stage presentation by Dimitris A. Tsiplakoulis, artistic director of the Lyceum of the Hellenes of Larissa. The dance groups of the Lyceum of Greek Girls will perform in an unparalleled way the dances and songs of the unforgettable places.

The outstanding musicians participating will also contribute:

The traditional music choral ensemble of the Lyceum of the Hellenes of Larissa, under the instruction of Kostas Dedousis, participates.

In conclusion, the dance, the song, the music, the historical narrative, will feed the collective memory with representations and images. We must, therefore, preserve the memory so that it teaches us reflection and equanimity. We do not forget that the Little Asia of antiquity, of Byzantium, but also of Fotis Kontoglou, Ilias Venezis, Kosmas Politis, Didos Sotiriou, Manolis Kalomiris, Yiannis Konstantinidis, etc., of the rebetikos and tradition is the Little Asia of our own country, which marked the fortunes of Hellenism in an indelible way, as the heart of eternal Romanism.
