Thewhen the Celine Dion married her husband, René Angélil, on December 17, 1994, she made every effort to make a fashion statement with her bridal look – so much so that one of the accessories she chose for the special occasion landed her in the hospital.

In a recent interview, the Grammy-winning artist revealed that the headpiece she wore, which was reportedly covered in 2,000 Swarovski crystals, weighed 7kg and was sewn onto her head on her wedding day to ensure the tall, heavy adornment it didn’t fall. Dion explained that at the time, she believed she could make it. “When you’re happy, there’s no burden, there’s no problem, there’s no pain,” she said, explaining her reasoning.

However, once she made her entrance into Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal on her big day, her confidence was tested. “I start walking and think, ‘Am I going to make it?’

And indeed he succeeded. She put all pain aside during the event telling herself that “ [είναι] all great, people [είναι] happy”, however, when she removed the headpiece that night, she noticed a cut on her head created by the “pressure”. By morning, things were much worse.

“The next day, I wake up, I look at myself in the mirror. I have one [καρούμπαλο] the size of an egg in the middle of my forehead. I then looked at my husband and said: “It’s too late now.” We’re married,” she joked, before adding that she had to take medication for the injury caused by her bridal headpiece. “I say, ‘Okay, let’s go to the doctor.’ I had to take antibiotics for about three weeks.”

Despite the unpleasant incident, Dion added that the memory of her marriage to her late husband “takes her breath away”. Angélil, with whom Dion has three sons, passed away in 2016 after a battle with cancer.

“My husband and I got married in ’94. On December 17, to be exact. I still feel his presence so much,” he said. “This is a moment that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
