The Baby Reindeer for many it is the most disturbing Netflix series. The story is well known, since judging by our Timeline there is no one left who has not seen it. Even out of curiosity. Logically, after the third episode of the series and until its end, one question haunts the mind of every viewer: who on earth is the real Martha and what finally happened to this woman?

The series is based on the real experiences of Scottish comedian Richard Gadd, who was called upon to face a real stalker in his very real life. Of course, there have been several fictional additions to the series “for legal and artistic reasons”, as he stated in Forbes.

“Obviously we were very aware that some of the characters in this are vulnerable people, so you don’t want to make their lives more difficult. So you have to change things to protect yourself and protect other people,” he also said.
Here’s what Gadd shared about the real person, the woman Martha’s character is based on.

Who is Martha in ‘Baby Reindeer’?

In Baby Reindeer Gadd plays Donny Dunn, a wannabe comedian and very confused man. One day, an unknown woman walks into the pub where Donny works. She doesn’t have money to order anything to drink, so Donny ends up, out of kindness, treating her to tea. Because of this gesture, the woman, named Martha and played amazingly by Jessica Gunning, Martha turns into his stalker, unable to read Donny’s true intentions.

The rest is history.

Who was the real stalker?

Gadd declined to name his actual stalker. Speaking to GQ he described her as a “quite temperamental person”.

“We went to such great lengths to disguise her to the point that I don’t think she would recognize herself. What we borrowed is an emotional truth, not an actual profile of someone,” he said.

In an interview with Variety, Gadd explained how he cast Gunning as Martha.
“What I needed to see was the essence of the person, the kind of energy, and no one did it like Jess. She is amazing. I got to see someone who was one moment vulnerable, the next angry, volatile, yet so desperate and sympathetic. I had to see someone who could capture a full range of emotions,” he said.

The internet had no trouble tracking down the real Martha

Because it’s 2024 and many years of online stalking experience (no pun intended), X/Twitter users have tracked down the real Martha’s profile and even found one that completely testifies to her identity, but also to her obsession with Gadd.

What happened to the real Martha?

In a Times article, Gadd emphasized that the situation had been resolved, with the article suggesting that he did not go to jail and that he “didn’t want to put someone who was that level of mentally ill in jail.”

As in the series, Gadd filed a lawsuit against his real-life stalker, while discussing the whole process with GQ.

“I can think of many examples where people have reported a stalker to the police, but because they may have had a previous relationship, the police didn’t take it seriously. They may be looking for a specific reason to arrest … but sometimes situations differ from that,” he said.

“The first thing the police should do is try to keep the person making the report safe rather than going through a long, painful process of figuring out whether to believe them or not.”
