The touching story behind the song heard at Matthew Perry’s funeral Marie Claire

THE his funeral Matthew Perry was held last Friday, Nov. 3, Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Friends and relatives were present with his co-stars in “Friends”, not being an exception. All of them were moved when they heard the song played at the ceremony.

Peter Gabriel’s 1986 song “Don’t Give Up”, featuring Kate Bush, was played as a farewell to the actor.

The lyrics “Don’t give up, because you have friends. Don’t give up, you’re not alone. Don’t give up, there’s no reason to be ashamed. Don’t give up, you still have us”they were the ones who made the atmosphere even heavier.

In one of his last interviews before his untimely death at the age of 54, Matthew spoke to Tom Power at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema in Toronto on November 22, 2022, he talked about this particular song and why he loved it so much.

Tragically, just a year before his death, Tom had asked Matthew what would be the soundtrack to his memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing – a book which received great attention immediately after his death.

When I sign my book, I always write ‘Don’t give up’, because, yes, you shouldn’t give up.” This statement of his had been accepted with great resonance by the public at the time.

Because his colleagues did not attend the entire funeral

Matthew Perry’s Friends co-stars attended his funeral, but only attended the first half of the ceremony.

According to reports, they were all seen at the funeral procession at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles, but not at the second half of the funeral, which was reserved for his family and very close friends.

“The cast of Friends did not attend the second half of the ceremony which took place a little further from the church in The Courts of Remembrance, a space consisting of several open-air courtyards.” a source told the Daily Mail.
