Who is Kostas Katsouranis?
It started from the local championship of E.P.S. Achaia with Doxa Chalandritsa in the 1st category. At the age of 17, he went to Panachaki, with whom he competed for the first time in the 1st National Championship in the 1996-97 season.
In the 2002-03 season, he transferred to AEK and while at the end of his contract with Panachaiki, he had negotiated with Panathinaikos, but without success. Discussions with Olympiacos followed, which also led nowhere, and he eventually ended up at AEK, signing a three-year contract.
In the “yellow and black” Katsouranis immediately became an integral part of the team. The 2004-05 season was the most important in his career at AEK as with the 12 goals he scored, he led them to a fierce battle for the title, eventually finishing in third place.
At that time, Werder Bremen expressed a strong interest in the Greek defender, but Katsouranis together with the then president Demi Nikolaidis decided to reject the offer. In 2005-06, he led AEK to second place in the league and to the Champions League of the following season.
Finally, in the summer of 2007, he left AEK and followed Fernando Santos to Benfica, for a fee of 2.3 million euros, where he remained for three years.
In June 2009, he returned to Greece by joining Panathinaikos, with whom he won the double in his first year.
On October 3, 2012, his contract with Panathinaikos was terminated and in January 2013 he agreed to continue his career at PAOK, where he remained for 1.5 years having a total of 48 appearances and 6 goals in the league.
On October 1, 2014, his acquisition by the Indian Pune City was announced, being the second Greek footballer to play in the Asian country’s league, after Alexandros Jorva.
On December 26, 2014, his agreement with Atromitos Athens was announced, where he signed a six-month contract, upon completion of which he left the club.
In September 2015, he came to an agreement with the Australian Heidelberg United to take part in a match for the institution of the Cup. On September 29, after completing his cooperation with the Australian club, he announced his retirement from active action.
Katsouranis was one of the key players in Greece’s triumph at the 2004 European Championship, participating in all six matches played by the Greek team. He then took part in the 2006 World Cup qualifiers, during which he scored his first goal, in the match against Kazakhstan.
