“They said bread is bread” 10 famous Greek actors who went through great financial difficulties

--

According to the prevailing definition, poverty means insufficient income. As a corollary of this, is the inability to adopt a decent standard of living.

Something that many of our fellow human beings experienced and are experiencing as it does not discriminate.

An example is 10 famous actors who while having recognition and many opportunities to work suddenly found themselves on the brink of financial ruin.

1. Spyros Fokas

Spyros Fokas is one of the Greek actors who had an international career, as he has starred in major productions in Europe and Hollywood.

The wife of Spyros Fokas, Lilian told “Espresso” and Nikos Nikolizas: “We went through a tragic situation with both PPC and the Tax Office. Spyros for the first time in his life, after persistent efforts, got copyrights from the many films he had acted in Italian cinema. However, because he owed the IRS, all that money was withheld. As a result, we don’t have a single euro to live on, but also to pay the electricity, so PPC cut it off. All of this created sadness, discomfort and heartache in my Spyros, resulting in him being rushed to the hospital. The amount we owed was 1,500 euros, but we put some money in every month. But the PPC service saw fit to cut the power. We had no light, no refrigerator, and no fan to make Spyros feel good.”

2. Nikos Ziagos
He lived a life that many would envy, he became very popular, but recently financial problems and some circumstances – such as a car accident – forced him to withdraw from active action. The news that the former heartthrob Nikos Ziagos, who also starred as a model in many commercials of that time, was hosted at the “Actor’s House”, surprised many.

He has stated: “Like most Greeks, I was in debt because I took out loans, while I was forced to sell my parental home to invest a fairly large amount in a bar in Nafpaktos, which unfortunately did not go well.”

3. Kaiti Finou

Kaiti Finou, after dozens of financial problems that torment her, is now hosted in the “Actress’s House”.

The actress, who swept the 80s in each of her films, has been living in the “Actress’s House” since 2013 after receiving help from her beloved Anna Fonsu

“We got lucky because Anna Fonsou was found and made “Spiti”. What would I do if it didn’t exist?’she said in an interview with ET. “A big thank you to Anna Fonsu since she helps us live in a house where it really is like a playground. I want to stay there as long as I can until I can get back on my feet…”

4. Rena Pagrati
When she committed suicide, Rena Pagrati was 49 years old. She had become famous from television and commercial cinema in the 80s, but her paint had faded. Her psychological problems combined with her lack of interest in her work had left her alone and single. No one took her to the theater anymore, even though it was all she wanted to do as a child.

He died in Athens on June 25, 1998 from drug poisoning. Her death was a suicide, a consequence of her economic poverty and unemployment in recent years. In a relevant letter found, the actress stated that apart from a very few of her colleagues, no one else wanted to hire her. Her life away from the board was what brought her to a financial and personal impasse. He was buried in the Byron Cemetery.

5. Sappho Notary
She died completely alone and helpless, in an apartment she lived in on Koumoundourou Square, today’s Eleftheria Square, at number 22, the rent of which was paid by a young businessman admirer of hers.

She was found two days after her death with an extinguished cigarette in her hand.

6. Kostas Hatzichristos

Kostas Hatzichristos was one of the leading actors of the Greek acting scene. But this is not something unknown. We’ve all laughed at him.

The descriptions of the time speak of a very open-minded man. After the performances or filming in movies, Hadzichristos used to gather 10-15 people and go together to have fun or eat. At the end of the evening he himself did not allow anyone to put a hand in his pocket and always took care of the bill himself.

In times full of commercial hits, this was not unreasonable. In times of risk and failure, this could not be continued.

The actor himself reveals in his biography everything that brought him close to financial drying up, with a film and a theater production taking away most of his earnings from so many years of running. Profits that could have been many times higher if he had a share in the receipts from the screenings of his films, since he had stated that he never received any income from the rights of his works.

“So I’m doing a movie called The Postman Goes On and I’m slightly broke financially. I mean, what slightly, that changed my lights. The movie went down the drain…I wasn’t a bum, no gambler who gambled and left fast, no racetrack or anything. Now how did I eat them? Do not ask. However, one thing is certain, I did not eat the money myself. Always with partners, friends and acquaintances. Never alone. But the biggest money was wasted on theater and film work.

And those who know about this, understand me more. However, I was never a coward and always took risks. And at that time, money was money. The only thing I and my little brother, Dimos, managed to do was to build a theater which at the time we took it was an old basement in bad shape. Like all people, I made my mistakes, but I was wronged. Especially in artistic circles, malice, jealousy and marginalization are a common phenomenon. You have to have iron nerves and talent.”

7. Thanasis Vengos
He went bankrupt and lost his home because he was “suffocated” by creditors and the IRS.

Thanasis Veggos was a very talented actor, who marked Greek cinema with his performances and style. In financial management, however, he had no talent at all. Within a short period of time, the company acquired large debts, which the actor was unable to cover.

His reputation for financial mismanagement quickly spread and those who wanted to make money immediately bought shares from Vengos. Even his old associates were quick to take advantage of his weakness. A typical example is that of an electrician, to whom Vengos donated percentages from one of his films, when he was informed that his wife was pregnant. When the film was released, the actor had no money to give the electrician. He then accused him of debt and took him to court.

Vengos was led to an impasse. His creditors were pressuring him, the tax authorities were after him and most of his friends and associates had turned their backs on him. The actor even lost his house in Kypseli, where he and his family lived. The apartment was his only asset, which he had acquired from his successful career. At some point all the aces that Veggos had up his sleeve ran out and it was time for him to declare bankruptcy. The closing of his company, as he had mentioned in an interview, cost him a lot.

The recovery for Vengos came many years later, when his finances were taken over by his old friend and partner Dinos Katsouridis, who also inspired him artistically, as a result of which they jointly created important films that won awards.

8. Dinos Karydis
“Smaragda, of course, supported me and is still supporting us financially. He stands by us as a helper”, he has stated many times while on another occasion he wrote: “I am in a miserable financial situation”. The above comment was posted on his personal Facebook account by Dinos Karydis. Naturally, the post of the popular actor and father of the glamorous lead actress Smaragda Karydis surprised many of his online friends, while it particularly upset some of them, as they interpreted his comment as a cry of despair.

9. Memo Begnis

“I’ve made a lot of money and lost it all! I’m broke and hit rock bottom. I made investments, got a house and a car for my mother, opened a restaurant in Salamis, so that I could have some income and work for my mother, who had a very difficult divorce, where she had no money and had to work. I gave more to my family than to myself. My only waste, if you will, was traveling. I went almost everywhere. I went to America, I traveled all over Europe, the Caribbean, Orlando, wherever you want. So I made a lot of money, which was spent, but I was living very well before the crisis. But when the crisis came, while I already had a lifestyle and wasn’t making the money I used to make – it was reduced to one-twentieth – I found myself in debt to banks, having debts, which I’m still paying today. For the last three years I have been going through a big hole in my finances. But it didn’t get me down, I didn’t get depressed, I just learned to be quite frugal with money.. Everything is a cycle, that’s why I never gave up. Now I have adjusted a lot. I cut my rent in half, I sold my car, I drive around, I don’t spend anymore and I don’t answer the phones at the banks! That is what we all do”, he said in Down Town Cyprus.

10. Andreas Barkoulis
The actor “left” his life poor. After his death, Mary Barkoulis revealed that she cannot manage the financial problems she and their son Andreas are facing.

The great actor had previously confessed: “I was born on August 4, 1936, the day Metaxas became dictator. My dad was a great teacher who went out of his way to provide for us. I remember, then we used to go to the village and get greens to eat. Where meat! Dad had also given me a cat to eat in the Occupation. And a dog. We then stayed with Praxitelos and Admiral Karaolis Dimitriou. Difficult years. Very hungry, I tell you.”

A leader who never gives up…
