Accuracy: Butchers, farmers and consumers in a frenzy over the price of the arrow just before Easter

“Salty” seems to be the lamb this year Easter with farmers and butchers noting that they will not sell lambs at an average price below 8 euros/kg and the latter to emphasize that, as the situation has developed after the announcements of the Ministry of Development, in their stores, the price is calculated this year a little lower than the 15 euros/kg.

According to information from ERT, the orders are already recorded with a percentage reduction 30% in relation to Easter of 2023. Unfortunately, Greek consumers will be asked to reach deeper into their pockets this Easter.

It should be noted that according to representatives of the producers, it is estimated that this year the exports made in the previous period to Italy, Spain and Portugal due to the Catholic Easter were by 20% increased compared to last year.

Skrekas: “Target in the “Household Basket”, the price of lamb should be from 10 euros per kilo and lower”

The “Easter Basket” which started today, aims to contain prices and consumers will see, for example, in lamb goats, the prices are the same and lower compared to last year’s corresponding period, as reported by Minister of Development, Kostas Skrekasspeaking yesterday (23/04) at 1The ERT program.

“So, this will largely contain inflation, it will enable vulnerable households and not only of course, to be able to supply the basics for it Easter table at much lower prices. Of course, the effort is not limited to the subject of the “Basket”.

We have gone through a series of interventions, correcting unfair trade practices and chronic distortions in the functioning of trade, so that we actually see slowly, as we see it, prices deescalate and the inflation to fall. But we still have a way to go, this is the reality, that households are struggling and that’s why we are not complacent and continue the interventions” Mr. Skrekas also noted.

Especially for the lambsthe Minister noted that there are many prices on the market, but the request for the government is in the “Household Basket”, the price of lamb should be from 10 euros per kilo and lower.

“Beyond that, there are products for all customers and for every kind of consumer, since he must have the choice. This is what we are trying to do, namely to give households the choice. They want to buy a product that is more affordable, why can’t they?

They want to choose another product, which may be more expensive, but have different quality characteristics or anyway they like it better, they can also choose it. This is what we need to ensure, that is, that there are options so that households can meet their needs, without difficulty,” he said.

“Wait basic productssuch as the Easter bun, the lamb and others Easterall this as is the feta and the rest, it seems, we will certainly see it in the “Household Basket” that will be announced tomorrow by each supermarket chain, it seems that the prices will be the same and in some cases will be even lower than last Easter”, added Mr. Skrekas.

Sta foods we see that in the last two months in Greece we have one deflation of the order of 40%. Of course this is not enough, because this inflation comes and sits on top of the inflation we had in previous years. That’s why I described how the situation started from ’19. Today, however, the government is trying, with the measures it has taken, to see the prices of these products stabilize and gradually de-escalate”, added Mr. Skrekas.

“Yesterday, for example, in the vegetable market we saw that in many basic fruits and vegetables, green salads or tomatoes have prices that are much lower than in the previous period.

From 35 cents for example, which had reached 50 cents, lettuce has gone below 30 cents now, which means that slowly we can see a de-escalation of prices. What can help. The checks we do in the Buy. Over 40,000 audits and over 17 million euros in fines to those who violated the law on unfair profiteering, which only Greece has passed such a law”, he also stated, assuring that the fines are collected normally.

“There is no question not to be collected and we see that they already comply, because no company does not want to be known as a company that has broken a law and been fined.

These are all things that slowly pay off. Of course, this cannot be done overnight, but we see that month by month inflation is decreasing, companies are complying with the law and little by little the prices will normalize, as happened with energy. Of course, we have not reached where we should be”, Mr. Skrekas emphasized.

The meters it seems that they have begun to pay off, as the Minister underlined, bringing for example the reductions in the prices of personal hygiene products, that is, shampoos, shower gels or household cleaners that are widely used by a household, where the Hellenic Statistical Service in the first month after the implementation of the measures showed deflation, i.e. a decrease in prices by 2 to 2.5% compared to the corresponding period last year.

“Not only, then, stabilized the prices in those products, but we saw that they also decreased compared to last year. But, I repeat, so that we are not misunderstood, that we have not reached where we want. The problem is big, we recognize it and that is why we are continuing with the checks and the measures we have taken until we see the prices on the shelves deescalate and we are not going to be complacent and we are not going to spare anyone.

We’re not going to let her go Greek market to be bare vine across from appetites of anyone who wants to take advantage of this difficult period”, concluded the Minister of Development.
