The Ministry of National Economy and Finance is launching a “cutting” of the fines for late payment of traffic fees, while the monthly traffic fees are also coming.

According to the plan, from 2025 a new penal code will be established for those who do not pay traffic taxes on time. Specifically, a graduated fine will be imposed depending on the time of late payment of the fees.

With the new system, the sooner after the deadline the debt is paid off, the smaller will be the independent fine that will be borne by the offenders.

Today, a horizontal penalty equal to twice the value of the annual fees is imposed regardless of how long the payment is late, even if it is one day after the due date.

With the changes that are being promoted, the goal is to rationalize the fines and at the same time ensure revenues of 1.2 billion. euros from road tax.

It is noted that a special working group at the Ministry of Finance has already started work and has undertaken the task of reforming and updating the framework of passenger car traffic fees, the formulation of opinions on regulatory and legislative arrangements, the processing and study of new technological finances, social and environmental developments as well as the terms, conditions and criteria for shaping the cost of the fees. The first draft is expected to be presented in September, while until then the technical working group will also study the road tax systems applied in other countries.

Today the road tax has several speeds depending on the emissions or the cubic capacity of the vehicle (for old cars) while a full exemption is provided for electric vehicles and hybrids that emit low pollutants.

Traffic fees per month

Until the beginning of May, it is expected that the provision will be submitted to the Parliament, which will enable the owners of stationary vehicles to re-circulate them by paying part of the annual fees depending on the time of circulation.

So if someone “takes their car back on the roads” for one month they will pay 1/12 of the registration fees, for two months on 2/12, for 3 months on 3/12 and so on. For example, if a car owner with annual road tax of 300 euros immobilizes his vehicle for a period of four months, he will pay 100 euros (4/12). For fees of 500 euros and re-circulation of the vehicle for three months the amount amounts to 125 euros and for fees of 900 euros and circulation for 6 months the amount is 450 euros.

Those who want to remove immobility should visit the MyCAR platform of AADE and pay the proportional traffic fees for the time they choose to put their vehicle on the road, while those who have filed their vehicle plates with the tax office should submit the request to the competent D.O.Y. to receive them.

It is noted that vehicle owners have the right to remove immobility only once within the year and when the period of movement for which the traffic fees have been paid expires they will have to put the vehicle in digital immobility or they will be faced with heavy fines.
