The Ministry of National Economy and Finance plans for 2025 changes to the fines imposed in cases of overdue payment of traffic fees, as well as an automatic mechanism that will immediately identify vehicles that have not passed through a KTEO or are uninsured.

Today, the fine for the late payment of traffic fees amounts to twice the value of the fees from the first day of delay. The scheme of fines is expected to change from 2025, as the Ministry of National Economy plans to establish a tiered system of fines depending on the time of late payment of fees.

The sooner the fees are paid after the deadline, the smaller the traffic tax fine will be. As the Minister of National Economy, Kostis Hatzidakis, said in yesterday’s statements, “changes are coming from 2025 to the fines imposed on those who delay payment of annual traffic fees. Today, a fine equal to the traffic fees is imposed from the 1st day of delay and from next year it will be imposed incrementally.

Late payment of road tax today, as well as non-payment, incurs a fine equal to 100% of the tax due on the vehicle. More specifically, the amount of the fine is:

  • Equal to the amount of fees if the vehicle is a two-wheeler/tricycle or a passenger car.
  • Equal to 50% of the fees if the vehicle is passenger D.X.
  • Zero if the road tax is less than 30 euros.

Automatic mechanism

At the same time, control is being tightened for the owners of uninsured vehicles and those that have not passed a roadworthiness test, as a new automatic mechanism will be activated that will detect offenders.

The new platform that has been designed and will soon be implemented will act as a “Big Brother” for uninsured vehicles. Through this mechanism, the Independent Public Revenue Authority will monitor, control and identify uninsured vehicles, proceeding immediately to impose fines on their owners. Vehicles that have not passed a technical inspection at the KTEOs will also be identified through this platform. The owners of the vehicles will be fined 150 euros, while if the violation is detected during a traffic control, the fine is 400 euros. It is noted that a digital service has been in operation for months that enables the exchange of data between the AADE and the Ministry of Transport, regarding uninsured vehicles such as those that have outstanding road tax payments, not only for the current year but also for previous years.

When are the monthly dues due?

Thousands of car owners who have digitally filed their vehicle number plates in order to avoid paying the fees for the whole of 2024 will have the possibility to proceed with the immobilization of their vehicles by paying monthly traffic fees.

The legislative provision which will enable taxpayers to digitally immobilize their vehicles, paying traffic fees depending on the months they want to circulate them, it is being prepared to be submitted to the Parliament.

The removal of the immobility is done through the myCAR platform of AADE. A necessary condition before the removal of the immobility is that the vehicle owners have insured their vehicles with a vehicle insurance contract. In case the fees are not paid, “Traffic Fees Notice” is selected.

With the Taxis codes, vehicle owners will enter the platform, select the vehicle that is in digital immobility and pay the tolls for the months they want. If someone re-registers their car for one month they will pay 1/12 of the registration fees, for two months on 2/12, for 3 months on 3/12 for 4 months on 4/12 and so on.

Then an automatic check will be made if the vehicle is insured and at the end the request to remove the immobility will be submitted.

It should be noted that the right to remove immobility is granted only once within the year, while when the period of movement for which proportionate traffic fees have been paid expires, the vehicle must immediately be digitally immobilized, otherwise the owner of the vehicle will be asked to pay heavy fines.
