Stassis: “PPC will lead the energy transition in SE Europe” – The message from Washington – Economic Mail

--

The prospects created by the energy transition in Southeast Europe, the role of PPC and the importance of security of supply were mentioned by the President and CEO of PPC Group, Mr. Giorgos Stassis, speaking as a keynote speaker at the annual conference of the Center for Strategic and International Studies ( CSIS), in Washington, on Tuesday, April 23. At the annual conference of CSIS, which specializes in issues of international strategy and security, the main speaker was the US Undersecretary for Energy, Mr. Jeffrey Pyatt.

Mr. Stassis set the goal for the future of the energy market, to “ensure we have a planet we can all live on without compromising access to affordable energy.” In this goal, RES have an important role, since, in addition to the clean energy they offer, they also increase energy security.

The limitations of RES

However, according to the CEO of PPC there are limitations to how far a country can go relying solely on domestic production from RES. “Energy systems must be flexible to ensure stability, reliability and cost efficiency. “Flexibility comes from both energy assets (such as batteries and gas plants) and critical infrastructure, including resilient electricity grids and interconnections between countries,” said Mr. Stassis.

SE Europe

Describing the specificities of Southeast Europe, Mr. Stassis emphasized that there is a wide range of conditions – from Romania that is less dependent on natural gas imports to a significantly dependent Bulgaria. From countries that have advanced significantly with their energy transformation, such as Greece, to more inactive countries, such as the Western Balkans. And of course from countries with a stable political environment such as EU members to dangerous conditions of hybrid war, such as in Ukraine.

PPC has the knowledge

“Despite the complexities, PPC, as an integrated utility company, a leader in the development of clean energy, critical infrastructure and energy services, is ideally positioned to lead the energy transition in Southeast Europe,” said Mr. Stassis. “We know how to quickly deploy RES and flexible capacity, how to expand and modernize electricity networks and how to meet customer demand for affordable prices. We also fully understand the importance of synergies and more generally what an electricity system needs to transition into the new era while remaining safe. This is our mission and the driving force behind all our decisions,” said Mr. Stassis, while making special mention of PPC’s investments in Alexandroupoli, with the CCGT unit under construction, and the acquisition of Enel’s companies in Romania.

Europe – USA cooperation

The head of the PPC Group particularly focused on the importance of cooperation between Europe and the US for the successful and secure energy transition of Southeast Europe. “For Europe’s energy transition to be successful, strong partnerships are needed, and cooperation between Europe and the United States is critical. I believe that the common journey is much safer, while the solitary journey is more dangerous than ever” emphasized the President of PPC and concluded that “at PPC we are committed to being a force of stability, while at the same time implementing the energy transition”.

The CSIS conference is attended by PPC Group and the Deputy CEO of Digital & Innovative Services, Mr. Alexandros Paterakis, the General Director of Strategy, Ms. Elena Giannakopoulou, and the management consultant for climate change issues, Mr. Andrei Covatariu.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a nonprofit policy research organization dedicated to advancing practical ideas for addressing the world’s grand challenges.
