The Ministry of Development is trying to keep the price of amnoerifi at 10 euros per kilo just before the implementation of the “Easter Basket” in supermarkets. The breeders consider the goal unattainable, who estimate that the price of lamb will reach up to 15 euros per kilo.

“The producer price is currently at 8-8.50 euros per kilo. A large number of animals have been lost in the past due to the cost of production. Animals have been lost from previous damages (fires, floods). With these data, there will be lamb on the market for up to 14 euros per kilo,” said the vice-president of the Hellenic Livestock Association, Dimitris Moschos, speaking to ANT1.

For lamb to cost 10 euros per kilo this year, either it will not be of good quality or the middlemen will be forced to squeeze their profit margins or the breeders will do it by reducing the producer price.

In 2023, the breeders had received strong pressure from traders to lower the price below 7 euros per kilo, so that consumers could find it economically in the supermarket basket. This year, however, they appear adamant to sell their meat below the cost of production.

“We cannot go below this price, but we see the same prices exist abroad. The only case for the 10 euros per kilo to come out is that the consumer will eat lambs that are not for spitting, lambs that are more degraded, that are not fat, they are not well fed” Mr. Moschos emphasized
