NEWS: May pensions are paid earlier as banks are closed for 5 days due to Easter.
The transfer of May Day and Easter 2024 “keep” the banks closed and bring the payments sooner or later.
The last day the banks will be open is Maundy Thursday, May 2 and, according to ieidiseis.gr, they will reopen on Wednesday, May 9, i.e. they will be closed for 5 days.

“Important update – Postponement of the May Day holiday
We would like to inform you that due to the Easter holiday and the transfer of the May Day holiday, debt payments and remittances that will be registered from M. Thursday 02 May, will be executed on Wednesday 8 May which is considered the next working day.
Transfers within Piraeus will be carried out normally, but with a value date of Wednesday, May 8.
For the execution of the payrolls, Wednesday, May 8, should be entered in the payroll file as the execution date.
Backdated and future orders with an execution date of Tuesday 7th May will be executed on Wednesday 8th May.
Also, the Athens Stock Exchange will remain closed on Friday, May 3, Monday, May 6 and Tuesday, May 7.”

The time for payment of the Easter Gift counts backwards as, according to the legislation, the allowance must have been paid no later than Holy Wednesday, which this year falls on 1 May.
However, those who will be paid earlier are the unemployed, as DYPA is going to pay the Easter gift to thousands of beneficiaries in the week before Holy Week, specifically between April 22 and 26.
In fact, then the payment of regular unemployment benefits, long-term unemployed benefits, as well as unemployment benefits for the self-employed will take place.
At the same time, the advance payments of the special maternity protection benefit will be paid to the beneficiaries.
Who are entitled to it?
As reported by the Information Center for Employees and the Unemployed (KEPEA), all employees employed in the private sector with an indefinite or fixed-term contract are entitled to receive an Easter gift from their employer.
For the calculation of the amount, the method of remuneration of the employees is taken into account, i.e. if they are paid by a daily wage or by a salary.
The time period for which the Gift is calculated, notes in.gr, starts from January 1st to April 30th of each year. Therefore, if someone works the entire above period of time, he is entitled to receive half a monthly salary if he is paid a salary and 15 days’ wages if he is paid a daily wage.
However, in the event that the employment relationship of an employee with his employer did not last the entire aforementioned period, either because he voluntarily left his job, or because he was fired, he is entitled to receive a proportion of the Gift which is calculated as follows:
In the case of a salaried employee, an amount equal to 1/15 of half the monthly salary or one day’s salary according to the agreed method of remuneration, for every eight calendar days. In case someone works less than eight days, he is entitled to a corresponding fraction for Easter Gift.
Contributions to the IKA and Wage Tax are withheld for the Easter gift. The Easter gift may in no case be paid in kind, but only in money.
Times
Not deducted but taken into account for the calculation of the Gift:
- The time of compulsory abstinence from work for women before and after childbirth.
- The period of time during which a working student received a study permit in order to participate in exams.
- The time of spa therapy leave, if there is an opinion from an insurance organization.
- If the employee fell ill during the above period, only the days he received sick pay from the insurance company will be deducted.
- Example: If an employee was absent from work due to illness for 60 days and only received sickness benefit from his insurance fund for 40 days, only the 40 days for which he was subsidized and not the 60 will be deducted from the period of employment.
The days on which the employee was absent from work without reason or due to unpaid leave are not counted. The period of absence of employees due to trade union activity (ie time on trade union leave) is not taken into account.
Regarding the strike, the judicial jurisprudence accepts that the days of the strike are not counted in the duration of the employment relationship because the abstention of the employee is due to his own will and therefore cannot be characterized as an excused absence. By analogy, the same applies to work stoppages, since they also constitute a strike in reality.
